Make Your Dreariest Winter Night Balmy and Bright
Oh those balmy winter nights! Yes, I do live in Southern California, but it’s not necessarily toasty warm this winter. More importantly, it’s rarely humid and tropical. It’s mostly desert out here, folks, so hot or cold, it’s usually dry, dry, dry. That’s why I love my balms – my L’Oreal Colour Riche Balms, to be exact.
Most desert dwellers (along with their cold-dwelling counterparts) know that the secret to extreme weather is a killer lip balm. Cracked and bleeding lips aren’t sexy, and many of us have learned to become balm-o-holics, in winter and beyond. So where does that leave the lipstick-lovers amongst us come winter? Certainly not out in the cold.
L’Oreal Colour Riche Balms ($7.95) are pretty and practical, at once soothing and colorful. Jojoba oil and Shea butter instantly nourish and moisturize lips, while continuing to provide hydration for a full eight hours. The sheer colors provide a pretty tint, while the oils offer a luster of which many glosses would be jealous.
The shades of Colour Riche Balms that I tried run the gamut from nudes to brights, all somehow reading as a realistic version of my natural lip color.
Nude Balm:
318 Heavenly Berry – an ultra sheer raspberry sorbet tint
Nude Balm in 318, Pop Balm in 410, 420, 430 and 440
Pop Balm:
410 Wild Lily – bubblegum fuchsia-pink
420 Bold Blush – magenta pink
430 Fiery Red – red orange with a touch of shimmer
440 Electric Pink – bright rose
Nude Balm in 318, Pop Balm in 410, 420, 430 and 440 swatched indoors
Pop Balm in 410, 420, 430 and 440 swatched outdoors
Since the Colour Riche Balms are on the sheer side, these aren’t super longwearing lip colors, but they do leave lips soft long after the gloss fades. The tint stains a bit, too, allowing for a bit of buildable color.

The wonderful thing about tinted lip color is that it is so adaptable to different skin tones. For example, I don’t usually look good in babydoll/bubblegum pinks, but Satin Pink looks incredible on my lips – particularly with wintery, smoky plum eyes. And that, my friends, is a party-ready look!
Yes, I always love the look of a good red, matte lip for a party or holiday, but wearing the beauteous L’Oreal Colour Riche Balms the rest of the time will make sure your lips are ready for anything.
we heartsters, what do you wear on your lips in the winter months?
I tried Tender Mauve which was a soft hint of mauve that graced my lips. These are perfect for dry winter days and a nice pop of color to my usual boring balms! It gave my lips a good amount of moisture and I really want to try some of the other colors… there’s so many to choose from.
Bring on the balms! I’m a balm kinda gal and am amazed at the quanity of colors to choose from! These L’Oreal balms look great but what’s in them? I’m getting picky about what I put on my lips!
Their website lists ingredients for the Pop line:

If you’re getting picky, you probably want to look towards organic…
Yes, what Stef said. On the other hand these have some great natural ingredients (they just happen to have some unnatural ones as well). I love these for the sheer color and the shine so much that the fact that these have things like Shea Butter to soften my lips just feels like a bonus.
I LOVE these!!! (3 exclamation marks kind of love.) They give you this creamy wash of color that’s just gorgeous.
I got to one each in my personal holy trinity of lip colors (nude/coral/red): 819 Caramel Comfort, 418 Caring Coral and 430 Fiery Red. I find myself reaching for Caramel Comfort the most, because it’s this easy warm nude that seems to go with whatever kind of makeup look I’m wearing. Caring Coral is similar, just a bit brighter. Fiery Red imparts the most color for a cherry popsicle kind of look.
Between the pretty shades and the creamy feel – these are hard to beat!
The range of colors is so beautiful, I know I won’t be satisfied with just one. Glad they’re so affordable! I love tinted balms in winter, when my lips are dry no matter what I do.
These look fantastic for all year wear. I like the sheerness and the color selection means you’ll never be unhappy!
Fiery Red and Plush Plum will be mine the next time I hit Target. I love tinted lip balms almost as much as a fat kid loves cake. As a former fat kid, that is A LOT.
I might need Electric Pink. It looks awesome.
Please bring back this product. Love, love, love and need them to be back in production
