The year: 2006
The occasion: My birthday
I was meeting up with my good friend Christy Kane (artist, wht writer and all around good egg) for some fun and festivities. Later that night when she slid me a gift and said “I hope you love this as much as I do” I knew I was in for something good. We had been obsessing about products to each other for 20 YEARS (we discovered BPAL together, just to give you an idea.). In the box was Sabon Carrot Body Lotion. Yes, I said carrot. And just like that, a new obsession was born.
Sabon is a bath and body company that started in Tel Aviv in 1997 by two people making soaps in their home. Flash forward 18 years and they are in over 130 stores in locations around the world: New York, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Rome and more.
I’m excited to share them with you, but also a bit hesitant. You know when you like a band that’s a bit under the radar, and then they make it mainstream and you feel almost angry that everyone likes them now? I’m feeling a bit of that. I want to share, but I want you to remember you introduced them to you. Because, we heartsters, you’re going to fall in love.
Quite the build up, right? What’s so amazing, why all the gushing, you’re thinking. It’s their scents. They. Are. Unbelievably. Gorgeous. Inspired by nature: delicate herbs and botanicals, fragrant flowers; every scent I have ever tried is quite literally, the best version of that scent that I ever tried.
Which leads me to their Patchouli Lavender Vanilla collection, one of their best selling scents. I have to admit, even as a big fan of the line, I was a little unsure I’d like it. Patchouli, I adore. Lavender I’m usually on the fence about. And Vanilla, I never like it. It’s always too sweet and terribly synthetic.
I’m happy to report that there is a reason this is a best seller. The combo is delicious, a bit sweet, earthy and herbal all at once. Rich and warm, yet sweet and light too somehow. I seriously wish we offered scratch and sniff technology.
I got to try three products.
Sabon’s Body Scrub ($33 for 21 oz) is one of my favorite body scrubs. PACKED with finely ground sea salt and a rich and emollient layer of Vitamin E and natural oils: Almond oil, Jojoba oil, Borage oil, oils sourced from the Amazon rain forest. The scent is amazingly long lasting. Like, you still can smell it on your skin the next day, kind of long lasting.
Make sure you order their wooden scoop too. It’s only $1 and it is so much more civilized than digging your hands in there!
The Body Lotion ($23 for 6.75 oz) comes in either a tube or a larger size jar. It’s paraben and mineral oil free, with a blend of Olive oil, Avocado, Borage and Wheat germ, vitamins A and E. Layer it on top of your skin, already soft from the scrub, and you’re skin will never feel better.
Finally, going back to their original roots is their Olive oil soap ($6.80 for 1 oz). Olive oil and coconut oil make the base, with patchouli and lavender oils added (known for cleaning skin and stimulating skin cell renewal.)
And I have to say, Sabon is killing it with the accessories! The Soap Bag ($5) is a scrubby cover that lets you exfoliate, helps keep the soap in tact longer and lets you use it down to the tiniest last sliver.
Happily, I will be making my first pilgrimage to a store when I’m in NYC next week (there are 11 locations in the city.) I can’t wait to report on my sniffing adventures.
we heartsters – take a look at their scents (Rose tea, anyone?) And let me know what you like!
