MAC Divine Night eye shadow and liner – swatches, looks and review

MAC Divine Night is the line’s only holiday 2013 collection with individual products (the other holiday collections are palettes or sets of products.) In this post will be concentrating on the eye colors – featuring six Mineralize Eye Shadows, three Fluidlines, Four Kohl Power Eye Pencils, and one pair of false lashes.
The colors in this collection are rich shimmery shades that can be worn sheered out or built up, and feature many new or repromoted limited edition shades. While the “limited edition” packaging for the Divine Night collection is nearly identical to MAC’s traditional packaging, the exception of gold foil lettering instead of black or white is elegant.

Divine Night Fluidline ($17.50 each)
My favorite products in this collection are the Fluidlines. Any time a limited edition Fluidline is available for purchase, you’ll find me inside the MAC store buying it! This holiday collection introduces three new hues and when we heart this received one for review, I had to check out other two as well!
Macroviolet (permanent) – grape with micro red pearl
It’s a pretty deep violet color, though it can take a few layers to get the most vivid color. It’s a fantastic color for brown-eyed ladies, and is subtle enough to wear to work.
Stares & Speculation – semi-sheer taupe with a gold sheen. It’s very subtle; a good choice as an eyeshadow base or on the lower lashline (not pictured).
Deliciously Rich – brown with gold and iridescent glitter flakes. It’s really pretty and works as a liner or as an eyeshadow base (not pictured). I really love this color!
Divine Night Kohl Power Eye Pencil ($17.50 each)
MAC’s famous kohl pencils in limited-edition Divine Night packaging. These pencils are “formulated to provide deep, opaque coverage and an intense, smoked finish with duo-chrome pearl.” They are great for creating fine lines, as well as blending and smudging.
Raven – blackened plum wine with plum wine pearl
Mystery – blackened emerald with emerald pearl
It wasn’t as intense as I would have expected for a kohl pencil. It takes a bit of layering on to really get the entire black with green pearl effect.

Mineralize Eye Shadow ($23 each)
People tend to either love Mineralize Eye Shadows or hate them. They’re sheer and meant for “layering” on color – using a dense flat eyeshadow brush to press on color works best, but darker colors sometimes end up looking patchy. You can also use a slightly damp shadow brush to get more vibrant color. While I like the look of these pans, the shape of the colors makes it a little more difficult to apply than if the pan were split down the middle half and half.
Tonight’s Temptation – dark charcoal gray shimmer/cobalt frost
The pigmentation isn’t quite there on the dark shade. The blue is a little better but both can come across splotchy unless you layer on quite a bit of color.
Until Dawn – sheer dark champagne shimmer/purple tinged taupe. The colors are very subtle, even when you pack on color.
Exquisite Ego – peachy bronze/hampagne frost

I would say that the Fluidlines are the clear standout products in this collection because of their versatility as eyeliners and also as eyeshadow bases. If you like sheer washes of color that you have to work to build up, this might be a good collection to check out, but if you prefer intense color that you can sheer out, these may not be for you.

@lipglossandspandex — Great run down on this collection. I bought macroviolet quite awhile back. This color is one of my go-to eyeliners. It makes my hazel eyes pop and dresses up any eye makeup look. This is true even when I feel like my eye shadow might be a little boring. I LOVE this color!
I love Fluidlines so much, especially Macroviolet. It’s a fantastic color, and it’s just so good for everyday!
While the screen was loading, I saw your lovely eye coming in and thought, “Oh, good, I KNOW that eye!” I heart “Macroviolet” (hazel eyes as well), and I would love to try “Until Dawn” at the least. Excellent, thorough job of demonstrating and showing the different looks, @lipglossandspandex!
haha that’s funny that you recognized my eye, Gigi!!! And I’m glad you enjoyed the different looks.
Look one and Look four are my favorites–I love the bronzy, precious metals sheen of those. And I’m intrigued by the Raven pencil–think I might have to check that out.
I, too, knew it was you before I even clicked through to read the post! You totally killed it with that blue smokey eye. So pretty!
Aw thanks Mandabear! :)
Until Dawn is the clear winner in my opinion with Exquisite Dawn a close second. These shadows are so gorgeous! They are subtle and yet perfectly suited for a party. I must get my hands on them!!
I strongly recommend checking out the Fluidlines in this collection–Macroviolet is a wonderful shade for everyday, and the other two shades are great as well. They’re “neutral-ish” and subtle, but pretty. The kohl eyeliner was good but not standout. And the mineralize eye shadows…pretty and subtle but I personally crave pigmentation, and these take too much work to build up. For the lighter shades, if you like sheers, they’ll be right up your alley. But if you see the black and blue and want vibrancy, you’ll get splotchy washed out color at best. Try MAC’s regular line of shadows instead!
I’m in the camp that loves Mineralize shadows. In the pan, Tonight’s Temptation is exactly the sort of duo I gravitate towards. Sorry to hear the results are splotchy. The looks you put together are gorgeous as ever, @lipglossandspandex !
Tonight’s temptation looks amazing on you, @lipglossandspandex! THAT is one classy blue shadow.
