How to add runway style beauty to your everyday look.
Recently, I attended the MAC Cosmetics Autumn/Winter 2014 Trends Presentation in Los Angeles. Alongside beauty editors, bloggers and makeup artists, I learned about the biggest trends we’ll be seeing this fall, from four of MAC’s most prestigious professional artists including Gregory Arlt (seen above), Caroline Donnelly, Cynthia Rivas and John Stapleton.
While these MAC fall trends are coming straight from the runways and magazine editorial pages, they can also be used in your every day makeup routine – and amped up for a night on the town. Ready to talk fall makeup trends? Let’s dive right in!
1. Off Color – As we’re getting ready to switch from summer shades to autumn hues, look to yourself for color inspiration. This trend is all about “deconstructing colors found naturally in one’s skin or face” to blend with the skin, not compete with it. The look gets edgy with bold application – think strong lines and edges in eye shadow or broad, defined brows.

Steal The Look: This one is all about you and the hues that best fit your complexion. Look to yourself to help guide you on your fall makeup choices. Use the natural pink of your lips as inspiration for blush, or the reddish-brown hue of that sprinkle of freckles as a base eyeshadow.
2. Streamlined – The 90’s are still shaping fashion. This look is “grungy but sophisticated” and once again the eyebrows are sharper and more dramatic, sometimes even filled in with bold “unnatural” color. The smoky eye also gets an update with the use of the big color trend – navy blue.

Steal The Look: Use navy eye liner in place of black. It’s the hue of fall, a less severe look and the shade visually brightens the whites of the eyes.
3. On Reflection – Showing a sunny glow isn’t over yet – it’s just more subdued. This trend is about “luminescence and glow; matte skin that is paired with shine with hints of reflection with a golden glow”. Here the glow is centered on the eyes or lips or cheeks, not the skin, like dabs of “liquid gold”. Bronze and gold glimmering hues are required here.
Steal The Look: Add bit of gold shine to center of your lids to open them up and add shine. This tip is just like the old-school trick of using matte white shadow to visually enhance and enlarge the eye.
4. Unprocessed – Our last trend focuses on skin and highlighting the “beauty of the individual woman; the look is natural yet not nude with colors that are subtle and pulled from the undertones of one’s skin”. Subtle highlighter is used to enhance the natural plains of the face. It’s so low-key and deconstructed that one suggestion was to apply and then remove makeup – leaving a whisper of color.

Steal The Look: The look you want here is clean, as if not a lot of effort was made – even though we know it is there! For your color cosmetics, go with your true nudes – shades almost the same tone/color as your skin. Use translucent powder, or highlighter, to add depth and a very soft glow.

I love Gregory Arlt! My favorite trend here is “On Reflection.” Those Electric Cool eyeshadows from A Novel Romance would be perfect for pulling that off – just a shiny, reflective eye with a deep red lip. Love it!
I LOVE these trends. Very wearable and so fashion forward. I definitely want to try to embrace navy liner. You always think black or brown is “natural” but I think navy is gonna look awesome for my brown eyes.
