MAC The Matte Lip – swatches, looks and review
The matte lip is back! Both beautifully vintage and marvelously modern at the same time, there’s something special about a matte lip. It demurely murmurs sophistication and elegance. This fall, MAC is adding several limited edition shades to the MAC The Matte Lip lineup, as well as coordinating Pro Longwear lip pencils and Pro Longwear blushes.
I had the opportunity to test four hues from the Matte Lipstick collection ($16 each), and three of the Pro Longwear Matte Lip Pencils ($20 each). Although I typically wear lipgloss (it’s easier), when I do wear lipstick, I tend to gravitate towards matte lipsticks.
I was already a huge fan of both of MAC’s matte formulas because they’re long lasting without being drying, the colors are fabulous, and of course, they have the signature vanilla MAC scent.
MAC Lipstick Swatches – The Matte Lip
Pander Me and Nouvelle Vogue lipstick
Pander Me (apricot nude) and Nouvelle Vogue (blue-based medium pink) are both beautiful matte neutral lipsticks perfect for everyday wear. They’re both work appropriate, but fun enough to wear out as well. I love that they apply beautifully–the pigmentation is excellent and the formula applies smoothly, like a satin lipstick, but becomes matte.
Fashion Revival and Heroine lipstick
Fashion Revival (deep berry) was my favorite of the matte lipsticks in this collection. It’s gorgeous, rich, berry color is so very flattering, and it’s a nice alternative to red for holiday parties. I actually could see myself wearing this color all year round.
Heroine (bright magenta) is definitely an attention grabbing lipstick. When you’re wearing something this bold, you want it to be perfection, and this is. The color is so fun, and it’s not fussy at all – one swipe is all you need for complete coverage.
MAC Pro Longwear Swatches – The Matte Lip
Etcetera (medium nude) is my favorite nude lipliner ever. I’m rather particular about the nuances of nude lipliner. This one is not too brown, not too pink, not too beige, not too pastel. It’s just the right blend, and would be a great base for any nude/neutral lipstick, or even on its own.
Etcetera and Trust in Red Pro Longwear lip pencils
Trust in Red (bright pinky-red) actually looked kind of pinkish-red on me. This lipliner was the most difficult to work with. It tugged at my lips and I had trouble getting an even coat of color.
Bespoken Pro Longwear lip pencil – great for humans and zombies!
I loved Bespoken For (vampy blood red) but also had trouble getting it to apply. Both Trust in Red and Bespoken For are best used as a base for lipstick rather than on their own, and they have some serious staying power – I needed to use makeup wipes to completely remove them.
The lipsticks had a good length of wear – several hours – and felt comfortable on my lips. The lipliners worked best purely as a base for the lipstick, but combined together, the staying power is really excellent. I will definitely continue to buy and recommend MAC’s matte lipsticks because of the quality and value.

What a beautiful shade Fashion Revival is. I’ve only tried the VivaMAC lippies, so these matte colors are very interesting. Loving the zombie look as well!
Marilyn, you gave me a fright with that last zombie look! Et cetera and Pander Me are my favorite colors – traditional, I know, but it can be hard to find a matte lipstick that really looks 100% natural. Thanks for sharing these!

You scared me too Marilyn! I love Matte lipsticks by MAC! These look great as usual on you! Great review lady!
Love me some matte lips! Less stick factor, more staying power…I’m practically drooling over here over those shades. Especially Fashion Revival – I’m with you @vyrlee! And holy moly Marilyn, you make a terrifying zombie! Amazing job! :)
Whoa, outta nowhere!! Just scrolling through lipstick pics, and BAM, zombie… Awesome! I have definitely been in a more matte mood lately, probably because of fall, these look great!
Sorry to scare you all! It was on a whim that I decided to draw some “veins” onto myself and the MAC Prolongwear Lip Pencil in “Bespoken” was just so perfect. And it totally lasted the entire 5k zombie run too! Now THAT is long wearing ;)
I can be really picky about colors, but I was so in love with all of the lipsticks because the formula was SO GOOD and the colors were just right. I’ve always recommended MAC Matte for a matte lip, and this collection just reinforces my opinion that they’re the best!
I was not expecting the zombie pic…lol…great makeup, @lipglossandspandex!!!
The Zombie pic was great!!! But I will say that I loved you in Fashion Revival the best. It is gorgeous!! I typically shy away from Matte formulas but perhaps modern day Matte from MAC is worth a try.
There I was, looking at your pictures, thinking pretty, pretty, pretty, AHHHHH!
I am glad that matte is back, and the first thing I’m going to pick up is Etcetera.
Loving the hue of Fashion Revival!
omg your zombie pic scared me! Wasn’t ready for that one! :) Love all these lippies!
