MAC Viva Glam Rihanna 2 – review, swatches, & looks
I adore MAC. It’s hard NOT to love them. Not only are their products fabulous and diverse, I also love that they encourage the recycling of their packaging with their Back 2 MAC program, and I ESPECIALLY love that they have their Viva Glam campaign – a line of permanent and limited edition lip products that donates every penny of the selling price toward helping women, men and children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS through the MAC AIDS Foundation.
Many of the permanent Viva Glam colors are classic shades of red, while many of the limited edition shades of Viva Glam are collaborations with various celebrities. Cyndi Lauper, Lady Gaga, Ru Paul, Nicki Minaj, and Ricky Martin have all participated in the Viva Glam campaign, and now, one of music’s biggest stars contributed towards a second campaign named in her honor: MAC Viva Glam Rihanna.
The new MAC Viva Glam Rihanna 2 collection features just two products: a lipstick and a lipglass. The packaging is a departure from the signature black tube – instead, the lip products are housed in a beautiful matte crimson packaging, with Rihanna’s signature printed in metallic red foil. As with all of MAC’s lip products, these have that signature vanilla scent that I love.
MAC describes each of these lip products as being a “frosted metallic mauve,” but I didn’t really detect mauve in either shade, and only saw metallic in the lipstick. In the tubes, they both look a little intimidating and seems a little too reminiscent of something I probably wore back in the 90’s. On your lips it’s a different story.
The MAC Viva Glam Rihanna 2 Lipstick ($16) is a VERY metallic dark taupe that’s more silvery at some angles and almost dark gray-brown at others. It’s definitely a dramatic look, but not as much of a throwback to the Wet n Wild frosty lip color that I tried to wear in middle school. It’s definitely closer to a high-fashion look than everyday wear for most people, but it does look great on medium to darker skin tones!
As you can see in the looks above, layering the lipstick with the Viva Glam Rihanna 2 Lipglass definitely makes it more wearable.
The MAC Viva Glam Rihanna 2 Lipglass ($15) is a mostly sheer gloss with a pink-lavender sparkle to it. It’s fantastic on it’s own, and it’s an EXCELLENT layerling lipgloss that really compliments any color you wear it over, but particularly the Viva Glam Rihanna 2 lipstick. This VG lipglass softens the frosty metallic finish of the lipstick and makes it a little more fun and flirty.
The texture and length of wear on these is both on par with other MAC products, and they’re the same price as well. While the lipstick is a little more “out there” than some of MAC’s permanent Viva Glam shades, I love that it’s fun and different, and I really love that it’s paired with a versatile lip gloss. If you haven’t checked them out yet, I would definitely suggest taking a look before they’re gone!
