Quest complete: this beauty editor found her perfect face wash

Michael Todd Charcoal Detox Deep Pore Gel Cleanser photos: we heart this

As co-editor of we heart this, it’s no surprise I’m obsessed with makeup. But surprisingly, my number one favorite product to review is face cleansers. I truly have combination skin – my forehead and nose can be oily, while my cheeks and areas around my eyes are prone to dry flaky patches. Throw in some redness and the occasional break out, and you get an editor obsessed with finding the perfect do-it-all face wash.

Take note, dear readers – I’ve found a contender! Lately we’ve been raving over the skin care line of Michael Todd True Organics. Our review team has found their cruelty-free products deliver what they promise; and they were impressed with their cutting edge, organic ingredients and luxurious feel. I’m jumping aboard the Michael Todd love train after testing the Charcoal Detox Deep Pore Gel Cleanser ($24); a one-stop face cleanser that has pushed all my other washes to the side.

Let’s start with the basics – the packaging. The pretty purple bottle comes as is – no need for a wasteful box with paper leaflets tucked inside – what you see is what you get. The lovely lavender hue is easy to spot with half closed eyes when I reach for it while in the shower or draped over my vanity. It has a simple, sturdy pump (my favorite applicator) that dispenses the perfect of amount of the gel-like formula for one face wash.

Speaking of the formula, the bottle lists each and every ingredient right on the bottle – with certified organic ingredients, there’s nothing to hide. This deep cleaning wash uses Activated Charcoal (known for its absorbent properties) to reach into pores and draw out dirt, oil and other impurities. Meanwhile Organic Aloe and Lavender soothes stressed skin, while Organic Rooibos Tea (a natural anti-inflammatory) helps to tone, reducing redness and calming acne flare-ups.

Yep, with that combination of ingredients the Charcoal Detox Cleanser is a little bit magical for my skin. And that’s not the end of the tricks. When dispensing the cleanser, the formula is a deep gray-black in appearance, but quickly foams up into a creamy, white lather. And hidden in that lather, I swear I feel a few gentle beads buffing my skin.

While the wash is a thorough cleanser, it’s gentle enough for most skin types (normal, combo and oily skin types will all love it). I’ve been using the Charcoal Detox Cleanser every day, and couldn’t be happier with the results. After using this wash my face feels completely clean and refreshed, my skin is free of shine, even my pores seem smaller – all without a hint of tightness or dry patches. And did I mention this cleanser also washes away all traces of makeup? It does!

Pros:
Thoroughly cleans skin without drying it out
Cleans deep into pores – making them look smaller
Certified organic ingredients
Vegan and Cruelty-free
Free of parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrance and artificial dyes

Cons:
A little pricey (but well worth it in my opinion!)

  1. ooooh, sounds nice @tyna! I’m glad you found something you LOVE to wash your face with! My skin is dry but my husband could use this..He’s (well, more like I am) always looking for something to help keep his skin clear. He’s Italian and has oily skin! I love many other products by Michael Todd True Organics. Love the many lipsticks and skincare! Great stuff indeed! :)

  2. This sounds like something I need to try, my current face wash is not cutting it. Looking at the product details, this seems to be about the same size of a standard cleaning bottle at 7 oz and I can make one of those bad boys last more than a month, maybe two. Looking at it as 50 cents a day for awesome skin, I think this might be worth it! Thanks for the review, @tyna, I’m going to check this out!

  3. This looks like a fantastic cleanser! The longer I go in the day with makeup on my face, the worse my skin feels. I hate that clogged pore feel you get when you have not been cleaning all too well. This seems like something that would work wonderfully in my routine. Cute simple bottle too. Great review @tyna!

  4. Still loving my Charcoal Detox Cleanser! It’s finally started to turn chilly here in LA, and normally my skin gets drier and extra flaky. I worried that this deep cleanser would be too harsh with the turn of season, but so far no problem at all. I’m using this wash once a day – and enjoying the herbally, lavender scent and super job it does of sopping up oil and cleaning out pores. Add in the vegan, organic formula and I’m giving this one 5 stars.

  5. LOVE this cleanser! Lavender scented and fabulously bubbly – the best part of all is how clean my skin feels after I use it. My pores feel like baby pores! Without a hint of tightness either. AND, works well with the Clarisonic. I can’t think of one thing I don’t like about Charcoal Detox, actually.

  6. You said all of my favorite words about cleansers: charcoal, detox, deep-pore cleaning, removes makeup, great lather, vegan and cruelty free… I actually get really nervous trying new skincare or foundation products because so few of them work for my skin. I’m really prone to breaking out, and changing one product can throw my skin out of whack. But given your rave review, and my love of Michael Todd products, I’m actually not too hesitant to give this one a try.

  7. Oooh I may be a little behind, but I wanted to use it a bit first before I make another post..

I received this from the WHT fairies and I must say, it’s a GREAT cleanser. I love using it at night when I need something that will work a bit harder than your standard basic cleanser. It’s great for getting in the pores, meaning that it is getting that makeup out of there. I love the scent too.

The pump is great at delivering however much product you want to come out. It’s very controlled which is great. The formula itself is far from runny and I never “lose” any that I dispense when it touches water.

I’m super happy with this product! :) 5 stars.
