Fall into Sephora’s COLOR VISION for the season’s hottest hues

To the fashion and makeup obsessed, fall represents all the glory the gods bestow upon us, the lowly disciples of trend. It starts out in the hometowns of the design house demi-gods with fashion weeks in New York, Milan, London and Paris and trickles down to their ardent followers. The design gods whisper a trend and watch it explode on the runways. This fall, the explosion is a fantastic exhibition of the most royal of colors: Purple.

Yes, it is a purple reign. Prada’s fall campaign is rife with the color in everything from bags to pantsuits. An Erdem model walked the London catwalk with a most exquisitely outrageous purple tweed-look bootie. And at Roberto Cavalli, Mr. Rock and Roll, they had purple eyes. Trends in makeup follow those on the runway, and this fall the Princely Purple hue is king. Sephora is right in the thick of things with their COLOR VISION campaign highlighting all things Nouveau Purple.

Let’s take a look at the color in action with fashion-forward makeup artist favorite, NARS, obliging the trend in a fantastical way with their Marie-Galante Duo Eyeshadow ($34).

Described by NARS as an iridescent orchid and an iridescent regal blue, the lavender to violet shades of Marie-Galante will give you a most multi-dimensional shimmer.

The blue, in particular, has shades of orchid depending on the light or the way you catch yourself in the mirror. Mysterious and exotic, these remind me more of the stardust found in a romantic dusk to midnight stroll: totally regal, totally romantic.

3 things to know about NARS Marie-Galante Eyeshadow Duo:

1. Youthful sparkle and spot-on fashion trend is what you’ll find here. The shimmer and multi-dimensional color mean that your purple eyes will never look like someone punched you in the face. If not done properly, many a cautionary makeup artist has warned, purple hues on the eyes can make one look sickly or, well, beat up. There is no chance of that with Marie-Galante.

2. Apply these dry for a sheer wash of color, or with a damp brush for deep color and crazy intensity. Better yet, apply on top of a similar (or completely different) cream shadow for unexpected depths of color (I tried the regal blue, dry, on top of a bronze cream shadow in the corners and creases, then lined my eyes with the same regal blue, wet, for a staggering new smoky eye).

3. Most importantly, experiment! These colors are fantastic highlighters when used with some of your favorite neutrals. You don’t have to commit to a full-on purple eye to be fashion forward and on trend.

  1. OOO! These colors are fabulous! You could totally use them to recreate the purple eye on Scar Jo that I showed on my trend report. OOOo…now I’m crazy inspired…oh, and that would look so good with your pretty blue eyes.

    Great post @sherishera :)

  2. The iridescent sheen in the eyeshadow is just gorgeous! Deep purple eyeliner is a good way to ease into the trend.

  3. These are truly the most versatile eyeshadows! Nearly every day I experiment with a new combination, a new brush, a new application–they are so much fun. I think I have worn these in some capacity every single day since I got them. My new favorite combo is a a dry shimmerry nude on the lid with this dry orchid inthe crease…and lots of black mascara. It’s a great daytime look. Tomorrow is a new day…suggestions?

    1. I am so glad to hear that these are so versatile. Double Duty shadows are a major plus in my book.

    2. I love purples with taupe. I’d love to see the dark shade smudged as a liner over a shimmery light taupe. Thanks for the fabulous review @sherrishera ~ you really captured the beauty of the duo in your equally elegant words.

  4. Ooh, @sherrishera , the iridescent quality of these shadows is unbelievably pretty! I’m going to check out the duo in person the next time I’m near a Sephora. Thanks for the purple inspiration!

  5. Love, love, love the colors in this duo! As a makeup junkie I of course have the classic NARS Orgasm blush (and love it) but I really do not have a lot of their eye shadows – must correct this soon. The iridescent regal blue is gorgeous.

It took me awhile to warm up to purple – but it’s true that it is a very flattering color. I’ve learned to love deep purples on my eyes – it really makes my baby blue shine. And I’ve slowly edged over to lighter and brighter purples and they are just as pretty on my lids. Very excited to see so many different types of purple making a statement this season!

  6. These are totally stunning! I also am a huge Orgasm blush fan but have never tried NARS eye shadows. I’d buy this duo in a second and would probably put the orchid on my lid with the regal blue in the crease and liner. I love the muted pink lipstick Stef is wearing too – I always struggle with the perfect lipstick with a purple eye and I’d say that nails it! Great review!

    1. I agree @mel – I have trouble with lipstick AND blush when it comes to purple eyes. Too pink looks tacky and too nude looks washed out. The medium/dusty tones seem the way to go.

  7. Thanks, this just got my head spinning off my shoulders! What great colors for the fall! I also love Orgasm blush by NARS.. turned onto it by Stef a while back. These just look like a whole lot of GORGEOUS to me!! Who doesn’t like purple? I think this can be worn light or heavy.. It’s just stunning on.. you just have to be a lookie loo when you see this along with that regal blue liner.. Great post!

  8. OMG!! NARS always makes fantastic eye shadows. But this duo looks even more AMAZING than the usual gems. I am in love! I love to use purple shadow for a smoky eye. It is so much more wearable than black for me.

  9. NARS makes amazing eye shadows and this duo is a stunner! I love how the blue manages to look classy and not trashy–that’s very hard for a blue shadow to manage.

Off-topic, but y’all need to check out NARS’ latest fall lippie, “Autumn Leaves”,–it’s gorgeous and different from anything else I own–and I own a lot of lipstick :)

    1. Straight on the “check out” list @krista! I loved their Joyous Red from last year, which was a red unlike any others I have. So I’m excited to see this too.

  10. Of all the Nouveau Purple picks that Sephora has to offer I admit that I prefer the Kat Von D Shade Shifter shadow in Love Letter. It’s a more burgundy based purple, which I’m partial to, but what can I say, I love NARS! And I love the shimmer in both of these shades. Oh well, guess I just “need” two new eyeshadows! Hehehe…

    1. I think that’s the key with purples – finding the shade that works for YOU. Red based or blue based can make a huge difference. I love red based burgundy purples, but every time I put them on I look sickly!

  11. These are so beautiful. I would not be a bit suprised if these end up being as popular as their famous blush.

@stef – Your pictures wearing this is awesome. It makes your eyes look so beautiful. I so want to replicate this look.

    1. Thanks @hao9703 – that’s really sweet of you to say. This was a tricky look to capture with all that shimmer. It’s like trying to film a fairy!

  12. Wow what an amazing duo! The iridescent is not a secret shimmer like most eyeshadows. Gorgeous!

  13. Gorgeous purple! I love that iridescence and anything that can be applied wet to boost the pigment power.
