tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof Cream Eyeshadow review

photos: we heart this

Spring is edging its way around the country and while those lovely April showers bring May flowers, they also bring warmth, humidity and a need for oily skinned gals like me to switch up our makeup routine. Bye bye to heavier moisturizers and hello to loads of primer and powder to keep my makeup from sliding all over my face. (Ick.)

And because of this change in regime, I also used to bid a fond farewell to my cream shadows in favor of powder ones that stay put as the temperature rises. However, after using tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof Cream Eyeshadow, I think I might have found a shadow I can hold on to straight into summer. From a company who leads in not just having the latest colors, but in their continuing commitment to environmental and social concerns as well.

Their Amazonian Clay Waterproof Cream Eyeshadow ($19) is another product in their line of cosmetics made with sun-baked clay from the banks of the Amazon river. This clay not only helps hold oil at bay, but nourishes, hydrates, mattifies and is just overall good for your skin. Combined with carnauba wax to keep the shadow in place and pigments to make the colors pop, this cream shadow stands high above its more pedestrian counterparts.

I got a look at two shades, Plum Smoke and Rich Brown for this review. Upon opening, I first noticed one thing The color is super saturated – intense with a wee hint of shimmer. I was in love.

But then I fell a bit out of love when I realized it is packaged in pot form rather than a pan. One of the things I hate about cream shadows is that when not packaged in a more flat form, it is almost impossible to get at without using a brush. I prefer to apply shadows with my fingers for more control (sorry germaphobes!) and I have pretty long fingernails which makes it nearly impossible for me to use the way I want to. It’s not a deal breaker, but still a disappointment.

Nit-picking aside, the Cream Shadows impressed me in every other way. The color blends well and easily and then it dries in about a minute to a stay-put finish. My favorite feature is how buildable the color is, you can add a quick wash of color and then apply more if you suddenly decide you want to go more dramatic. I’ve even used these as a liner and they stayed in place, even on my lower lash line! Brilliant…

Overall, I found tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof Cream Eyeshadow to be a great product for any kind of weather or skin type. My fellow testers received Shimmering Moss, Slate and Seashell Pink and I cannot wait to hear what they thought so I can have an excuse to buy some more colors!

So bring it on heat, humidity and spring rain! I have tarte on my side and I am READY.

  1. These sound really nice, @lyssachelle — and Shimmering Moss is SO beautiful! I’m going to have to check these out in person.

    1. I tested Shimmering Moss in Sephora and came SO close to buying it, but I was already stocking up on some essentials so I resisted. (Barely.) It is just as lovely in person, if not more so…

  2. I love Tarte, and the Shimmering Moss one looks so incredibly pretty! I don’t like sticking my fingers in a pot either, so sometimes if I like a shade enough, I’ll use a brush to put it on my lids, and then use my fingers to blend it out.

    1. I’m glad I’m not the only finger blender! I think part of me just hates to clean brushes so I whine about having to use them AND my finger. :-)
Luckily, this dries quickly but not so much so that you can’t use a brush to apply and then blend. However, you do have to work fairly fast!

  3. In case you couldn’t tell, this is five stars for me! At first, when I started testing, I really thought I’d deduct a star for the packaging (I REALLY hate cream shadow in pots…) but after having more time to fall in love, I don’t think I can truly take a away a star for my own quirk. The formula on this is too good and the colors really do pop SO much better than standard cream shadows. Add to that the dual usual as a liner for the darker shadows and I’m sold.

    5 STARS!

  4. Really brilliant colors! I’ve been always sceptic with permanent makeups but I cannot resist these colors so I think I’m going to give it a try! Plum Smoke is my new favorite, there is no question.

  5. You had me at “no matter what the forecast”. The seashell color really speaks to me. It seems like a great color to build on

    1. I keep looking at the Seashell too! It’s just so pretty, it reminds me exactly of those abalone shells you find that flash that gorgeous pink…

  6. These are totally gorgeous – I’m green with envy! I’ve been hearing nothing but great things from Erin on tarte’s Amazonian clay products, and I think I need every one of these – especially Shimmering Moss!! Or Plum Smoke or Rich Brown or Slate…

I am adoring this product! I have rich brown and I even use it as a brow fill. It matches my dark brown/auburn hair and does not budge! The glitter is not noticeable when used there, also.
