I have thick Asian hair so if I don’t wash every day, it becomes oily and flat. I know it’s bad for my hair and scalp to wash everyday, but I had to…until I re-discovered dry shampoos.
I tried dry shampoos many years ago, but wrote them off because I was left with a messy white residue on my black hair.
Then about a year ago, I gave dry shampoos another try and was impressed. After testing four contenders, the dry shampoo spray of my choice was Suave.
Super effective and a great value, but the problem is that it runs out very quickly. I think I used it maybe 5 times and the can was done.
Boo.
Today, I’m here to let you know my new favorite – Not Your Mother’s Hair Care Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo.
The Not Your Mother’s brand (NYM) can be found on the shelves of CVS, Walmart, Duane Reed, Ulta and more and this 7-ounce dry shampoo retails for about 6 bucks. I’ve gotta say, I really heart this product and I hope that the We Heart This readers will heart this too.
Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo Review
For this review, I tested to see how well the Clean Freak Dry Shampoo works to prevent yucky, oily and clumpy hair.
It’s simple to use, just spray as much or as little as needed onto the roots of hair, and then brush and style as normal. There’s a light, clean scent at first, but it doesn’t really linger in the hair.
But does it work?
Let’s look at the photo evidence! Here’s a picture after three days (!) without washing my hair and without any dry shampoo products.
Clean Freak Dry Shampoo Results
Three days of not washing, no dry shampoo applied
Now, here is a photo of my hair after four (!!) days of not washing my hair. Pretty impressive, right?
Four days of not washing, Clean Freak applied from 2nd day on
For the record, during the testing period, I used Clean freak a little differently. I began to spray the dry shampoo on the roots of my hair starting on the 2nd day (when I really didn’t need it), instead of waiting until the 3rd or 4th day (when I definitely do).
My goodness, what a difference. I can’t believe I went FOUR days without washing; I don’t think I’ve ever done that in my life.
I’m really amazed by Clean Freak – just look at those images – and recommend using it as a preventative measure if you can plan ahead. But of course, it works well in those emergencies, “oh shoot I woke up late and don’t have time to wash my hair” mornings as well.
Finally, I wanted to show how Clean Freak does not leave any white powder. So, I tried another beauty experiment. I took a black sock and sprayed it with NYM’s Clean Freak to see if there would be any white residue or fall out. Let’s see the results:
Looks pretty good to me. So I’m happy to let you all know that Not Your Mother’s is my new FAVORITE dry shampoo. No white residue. Great price. Product lasts. Smells clean. And I still can’t get over the fact that I didn’t wash my hair for 4 days!
Thank you Not Your Mother’s for a great affordable product that lasts, and thank you to we heart this for letting me share my experience with you.

Wow! This product sounds great. I am a big fan of dry shampoos since I have bangs and have to wake up at 4:30am (hello, shampooing the night before!)
My favorite is Klorane, but I will have to give Not Your Mother’s a try.
Thanks for the info, great before and after pictures!
Oh my word @glamazon56 – 4:30?! So early – that’s gotta be really hard some days. Hooray for evening showers.
Sounds like a really cool product. I don’t wash my hair everyday.. and push it as long as I can-especially after I have my hair done! This may be a good way to keep it looking great for days! I’ll keep my eyes open for this next trip to CVS. Great review on this! :)
As a curly girl, I co-wash daily; but when I straighten my hair I DEFINITELY get a bit greasy after a few days. This looks perfect for that, it’d make my blow-out last longer! And how cute is the branding?? Reminds me up the Muppets, very adorable. Thanks for the review, Pretty Gossip!!!
@lyssachelle – what’s co-wash?
@stef – Conditioner washing! I rinse my hair and use a lighter conditioner instead of shampoo on most days and just shampoo and deep condtion once a week or so. Shampoos can strip my hair if I do it everyday, but co-wash helps keep it soft and detangled…
Those things look so funky. I love it! Glad its effective and cute!
I love dry shampoos but am still on the search for the perfect one. Definitely adding this to my list of things to check out!! Thanks for the review!
Thanks for the guest post Pretty Gossip and for introducing me to a new brand and product that I can wait to try. I’m a big dry shampoo fan – with my thin, flat, straight hair that needs daily washing, it’s a must. And since I’m crazy for beauty products, I am always trying new ones out. Adding Clean Freak to my list – I see Ulta in my weekend plans!
Thank you We Heart This for the opportunity to share this product and my review. I used to wash my hair EVERYDAY before I discovered Dry Shampoos (3 months ago). So far, I’ve tried quite a few, and I like Clean Freak the best. Effective and affordable. Love it.
Thank you to We Heart This readers!~ I hope to pretty gossip with you again… soon!~ ;)
I have Asian hair and I use Suave also. I used to use Batiste but Suave is easier for me to find at my local drugstore. I didn’t know that *this* cute line is found at drugstores! Ah! I’m running to find them as soon as I run out of Suave.
You can get it at Ulta.com or Walmart.com. They’re going into CVS stores too :) (here’s a little secret I haven’t shared even with my readers… I’ll probably do a NYM’s giveaway soon, so stay tuned!~)
I love dry shampoos, and I’m super excited to try this one out. The price is great, definitely. And I love how thorough your review was, with all of the great detailed pictures.
Woo hoo, there’s an Ulta right by me and this is going to the top of my list! I use dry shampoo a lot so if this works as well as you say it does, I can’t wait to try it! Great price too!
