tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Shimmering Blush review

tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Shimmering Blush collectionphotos: we heart this

I’m something of a blush aficionado. Make that, I’m obsessed. I’m constantly in pursuit of perfectly flushed cheeks – I feel absolutely nude without blush. If I’m not wearing any, I practically maim myself pinching my cheeks with great ferocity. I’ve got it bad, ladies.

That being said, it’s not often that I’m dazzled anymore. I’ve tried most brands and in most formulations, and while some brands are better than the rest of the pack, very few are frontrunners for me. However, one of my all-time favorite cheek products is tarte Cheek Stain, so it’s no surprise to me that when tarte created a powder blush using Amazonian clay, I would end up totally wowed.

That’s right, WOWED. What could possibly improve upon said Amazonian clay formula? SHIMMER! (Everything’s better with shimmer…and bacon.)

Tarte's Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Shimmering Blush packaging

Tarte’s Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Shimmering Blush builds upon the already stellar Amazonian Clay formula and adds a touch of gold and silver shimmer.

Upon first inspection, I was a wee bit concerned about the seemingly larger size of the shimmer particles, but my concerns were completely dismissed once I applied this. Not only did this finely milled powder apply like a dream, I couldn’t make out any chunks of glitter, just a bit of glow. Think ethereal, not disco ball.

Even better, tarte’s latest shimmering blush not only leaves cheeks with a flush and a touch of sheen, but it stays put for the promised 12 hours. I’ve recently been purchasing all kinds of cosmetics that promise 12 hours, 24 hours, or tattoo-like wear, and all have lied to me, we’re talking to a laughable degree.

Tarte wouldn’t dare do something so mean. Nope, tarte delivers. Not only did this combo/usually oily-skinned gal have some blush remaining at the end of her day, but my cheeks looked as fresh as they did in the morning. This does not happen people, at least not without promising some dark overlord my firstborn.

This newest formulation is available in 4 must-have shades:
Frisky – Shimmering bright coral
Buff – Shimmering nude
Glisten – Shimmery peachy pink
Adored – Shimmering light pink

Adored blush with a shimmering light pink shade Adored

I received two hues to test and they are easily my new favorites in my blush collection. First up, Adored, which creates a perfect rosy cheek; it’s very similar in shade to the regular formula Amazonian Clay blush in Dollface, which is another favorite of mine. The shimmer adds a nice touch and makes it a little more special.

Buff blush with a shimmering nude shade Buff

Next up Buff, a shade I worried might be too brown for me, but it was weirdly perfect on my skin. There’s a slight touch of mauve to it, so it keeps the shade from being muddy. It really created a very subtle and natural blush, perfect for when you want a very natural look.

The compacts on these are also lovely – you can differentiate them easily from the regular blush because the plastic casing has shimmer to it. The pans are also generously sized; you may pay $25, but these beauties will last you a long time.

As a side note, I’m kind of loving tarte more than ever since they started creating cosmetics using Amazonian clay. This stuff is pretty terrific. It does wonders for most skin types. For oilier girls, it keeps shine at bay. For drier skin, it moisturizes. Combo skin is evened out. It even improves skin clarity and texture. As some products create breakouts in my sometimes-temperamental skin, this actually calms and improves my skin, which I love.

If you’re acne-prone, you will absolutely adore this blush. If you have sensitive skin or just like to avoid harsh chemicals, this blush is formulated without mineral oil, parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, or synthetic fragrance. It’s also cruelty-free.

If you don’t already own one of these babies, you’re probably wondering why not at this point. After testing these, I’m wondering, too.

Amazon Clay does wonders for any skin type
Blush lasts the promised 12 hours (and beyond)
Available shades are flattering and natural looking
Shimmer gives skin a lovely glow
Generously sized pan

None (That’s right, I can’t think of a single con on these. I can’t even say how rare that is for me. RARE.)

Have any of you tried tarte’s newer products with Amazonian clay? Are you wondering where this clay has been your whole life, too (besides the banks of the Amazon)?

If you’re hooked on any other Amazonian clay products from tarte, I want to hear about it!

  1. Ooooh, both Glisten and Buff look awesome to me.. I like the idea of a long lasting blush that is actually good for your skin too!
I’m begining to really fall hard for Tarte! Great review Krista!

  2. For me, blush is one of those basic items, like foundation or concealer or brow powder–it’s important but not really noticeable. I don’t tend to get really excited about blush. However, Tarte’s 12 Hour Shimmering Blush is something to get worked up about! I received Frisky to try out. It is a little intimidating in the pan–a BRIGHT coral with bits of glitter. However, it looked great on my NC35 skintone and wasn’t overly sparkly. The color is just gorgeous. The texture is smooth, and it really does last all day. The casing is sturdy, compact and cute, and even has a mirror inside. I like that the case matches the color of the blush–that makes it easy to identify. The price is a little above mid-range for a powder blush, but that’s the only drawback. Really, I’d have to say this is probably one of my favorite blushes. I’m giving it five stars. :)

  3. Wow, I’d wear Glisten right now, and Frisky would be perfect with a Summer (fake) tan!

  4. Frisky looks like it’s right up my alley. And oddly, I would normally gravitate towards Glisten, but Buff looks VERY intriguing. I’ll have to check it out in the store, it looks like it might come across as more bronze on me and I think I’d like that, just to change it up a bit!

Thanks, @krista! I love a girl who knows the importance of shimmer…AND bacon!

  5. Glisten does look beautiful. I have a couple blushes from Tarte, and I’m getting a new one in the gift set WHT just featured. I love them and they do last. Also, I am oil prone and they stay on for a long time and the Amazonian clay helps keep the oil in check. I too, have been unbelievably impressed with every clay product I’ve tried from Tarte…I love them all.

  6. @lyssachelle – Bacon and shimmer are two of my favorite things :) lol

All I can say is that I’m really loving these Amazonian Clay blushes…these are getting a huge 5 stars from me!

Frisky & Glisten really want to be mine…I pretty much need to collect all of these and then move on to the non-shimmer blushes…especially Natural Beauty and Tipsy…now I just need to sell a kidney to support my blush habit :P

  7. I received GLISTEN to test. I was not sure what to think at first because this product does have shimmer when you open the compact. Typically, I try to pick products I can use for work and play. For work, I need to be sort of conservative and shimmer and glitter just do not work, so those words for me are not normally positive attributes.

Well, just like @krista said – it goes on like magic. “Ethereal” is a perfect description of the effect. Glisten as a color is perfect for my pale face. (I would consider my self between a fairly light and fairly medium color.) I found it to be very versatile. Usually, if I have a coral blush, I would not wear anything pick with it—eye shadow, shirt whatever. However, this color was a pretty good chameleon and having some pink on did not clash.

I have not ever been this excited about a blush—let alone one with shimmer. I want to confirm this product is long lasting and comes in a substantial, sturdy compact (this will not break) with a good mirror.

    5 solid stars!!

  8. These are so pretty! I have never tried a Tarte blush, but Glisten is calling my cool is buff though!? wow!

  9. I don’t know how I could choose a color. The entire range is so beautiful, and I could see all of them working in the right situation. Glisten… SO pretty!

  10. I have like 4 of the Amazonian Clay blushes and I simply adore them!! For years I have pretty much forsaken powder blush in favor of cream or gel products. But these are simply amazing!!!! I am in love. The quality is out of this world. The staying power is outstanding. Every shade that I have tried has given me that perfect glow! I highly recommend any of these. You can’t go wrong. 5 HUGE STARS FROM ME!!!!!!

  11. Ok, youguys have me sold – this blush is going on my next shopping list…finally!

  12. I only own one of these blushes from a previous gift set and I wear it almost everyday! I love Tarte blushes.

  13. I love Tarte blushes, and Buff might be the perfect shade for me to make the jump into bronzer. Most bronzers make me look kinda dirty, but I think Buff is just golden enough to work. Love it!
