It’s that time of the year y’all – I cannot believe that the big day is almost here! I love the holiday season so much, because this is the time of year when my creative brain goes crazy. The decorating, the gift wrapping, the baking …ahhh so fabulous!

One of my favorite things to do every year is to make special homemade baked gifts and I create something every season for my (as well as the hub’s) coworkers. I really do put a lot of time and thought into these presents. I like them to look more like a gift, instead of a boring dessert that I bring to the office.

Other reasons I love to give baked goodies as gifts? Food is ALWAYS welcome (who doesn’t like butter and sugar?!), is very budget friendly, and there’s no need to enter a mall! (If your mall is anything like mine during the Christmas season, you’ll understand.)

Decorated Sugar Cookies, Chocolate Covered Pretzels and Oreo Truffles wrapped in cellophane bags

Two years ago I made Decorated Sugar Cookies, Chocolate Covered Pretzels and Oreo Truffles that I wrapped in cellophane bags (above) that I found at Michaels. You can find these in almost any craft store and often discount and dollar stores as well. I then packaged the cellophane bags in Christmas themed take-out containers, also found at Michaels.

Last year, I tried something different – tins. I purchased these tins at Hobby Lobby when they were 50% off one week, and packaged the goodies in cellophane bags, wax paper and foil candy wrappers.

The favorite thing in the gifts year after year are the Oreo Truffles. So, if you need a few last minute gifts, whip out your apron and try these crowd pleasers. Before you get worried, this is SUCH an easy recipe, so I totally want to share this one with y’all!

Ingredients:
• 1 package oreos
• 14 oz. condensed milk
• 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
• Almond bark or melting chocolate
• Sprinkles, for decoration

Directions:

  1. First, crush the oreos in a ziploc bag or a food processor.
  2. Then, add the condensed milk and vanilla and mix together.
  3. Form into small balls and place them on a small cookie sheet. Allow them to set in the freezer for a half hour. This will make them significantly easier to work with when it comes time for dipping in chocolate.
  4. Melt the chocolates according to the directions on the bag. I really like to add 1/4 tsp. of vegetable oil to help it melt smoother.
  5. Then dip the balls in the chocolate. I find a slotted spoon to be best for this. When you take it out, gently tap your wrist that is holding the spoon to allow the excess chocolate to drip off.
  6. Place the dipped ball on wax paper, add sprinkles on top of the truffle and allow to set.

Aren’t they super cute!? Of course, these babies were once again in my holiday packages.

Do y’all make (or even receive) homemade gifts? What are your favorite goodies? (I personally have a weakness for my mother’s fudge…)

  1. Ha! I’m in the process of making Oreo truffles as I type this–I’m waiting for the filling to chill so I can form it into balls. The recipe I use is a little different–one package of Oreos and one package of cream cheese in the food processor and then I cover it in that white chocolate melting chocolate they carry at craft stores for candy making. Everybody loves an Oreo truffle!
Weirdly, I was also contemplating making peppermint marshmallows, too…it’s like we share the same brain, @niftyfoodie !
So far this year, I’ve made eggnog cookies, chocolate cookies w/ mini Reece’s pieces, and molasses cookies for my brother (he doesn’t bake). The truffles are rounding things out–I’m taking them to a get together w/ some college friends and to Christmas dinner @ my brother-in-law’s as a hostess gift. Depending on my mood, I may cave and make some cut outs later today–I have some Christmas Story cookie cutters that are begging to be used. I’ve already made pumpkin bread for my dad and the in-laws and I’m testing out an eggnog coffee cake recipe this morning, too.
I love manic baking days :P

  2. I make homemade snack mix. Super easy and really good. I tend to like salty foods over sweet and I feel that a lot of people give sweets for gifts, so I like to throw in something salty. I just mix Corn, Wheat, and Rice Chex cereal together with pecans, add a good helping of butter and worcestershier sauce and bake for an hour, stirring every 15 mins.

These Truffles sound really good too. One of my neighbors brought over Christmas candy last night and I think this was on the plate! Whatever it was, I couldn’t stop eating it!

  3. These look so cute and so yummy!! What a great gift idea. If only someone would make some for me! :)

  4. I attempt to make lovely gifts like this every year, but most years I fail due to time or laziness. :-(
Last year it was cake tuffles (like Oreo truffles, but with cake and frosting!) and possibly frosted sugar cookies. I’ve actually never used royal icing, so we’ll see how it goes!

  5. These look so yummy! I have made pretzels dipped in almond bark with a red or green M &M’s in the middle. (They were a huge hit bit! My friends liked the sweet and salty combo.)

  6. @Krista Eggnog coffee cake!? That sounds absolutely yummy! I love eggnog!

@Cori Oreo Truffles are absolutely addicting! I have to make just enough for gifts if I want to avoid a diet disaster!

@Alyssa best of luck with royal icing!

  7. You are all very inspiring. I am baking napalm.

  8. Oh yum! What an easy and tasty looking recipe! I bet it would easily translate into a gluten free version using the various GF “Oreo” sandwiches out there. If I dare brave the supermarket later on this week (today was probably the last sane grocery shopping day!) I’m totally going to make these. Thanks @Niftyfoodie !

  9. These look devine and I can’t wait to try them. I’ve made the similar version, with cream cheese instead of the condensed milk, but I’ve never dipped and decorated them like that… so festive!

  10. I’ve made these and they are so delicious! Never done them with white chocolate. These look perfect for Christmas.
