Is it possible to get fuller, plumper lips while you sleep?
I love having a routine before I go to bed. And an important part of that routine is the lip balm that I keep on my bedside table – it’s right next to the lamp and my book. Over the years that special little bedside spot has been occupied by many, many, many products. Right now it’s the lovely blue tube of lip therapy from the natural line Own.
This is a Green Monday worthy company on a mission, literally. Their website says they are on a “crusade to make safe, natural, and effective skincare”. Why? Well, because they couldn’t find any lines that worked and were affordable. So they set out to create just that! The San Francisco based company specializes in sunscreen, acne care, anti-aging, and lip products.
They scoured the globe for natural sources, put together a group of top notch chemists to study the results, and filed for 16 patents while creating a line that helps your body work even better. Own claims the ingredients in their products can help “turn on the mechanisms that produce collagen and elastin” and “optimize cell turnover” to keep skin plump, fresh and healthy.
We got a chance to review the Nighttime Lip Therapy ($9.99), one of five products in the lip therapy line. Every product in this lip care collection has a unique natural collagen booster and is designed to plump the lips while moisturizing. The Nighttime Lip Therapy has a blend of Moss Rose and Shea Butter to hydrate and smooth lips while building volume – all while you sleep!
I was first intrigued by its unique packaging. The applicator in the ultra tapered tube is a fun little roller ball “because your lips don’t have right angles”. It easily glides over lips depositing an even layer of balm. And I love the tapered tube because it’s long enough that it can be easily found when you’re digging around in your purse, or, in my case, reaching around blindly in the dark. (Yes, I am so obsessed with lip balms that I re-apply when I wake up in the middle of the night.)
The second thing I noticed about this product was the scent. To me it smelled like the sugar cookies you get at the neighborhood bakery. I get a hint of lavender, but mostly it’s a nice light sugary lemony scent, not too sweet and not too strong. The first night I put it on my dog was sharing my pillow and she loved the scent of it, I think she spent at least 2 minutes just sniffing at my lips!
The consistency of this product is somewhere between a lip balm and a lip-gloss, it goes on smooth, like a gloss, but absorbs quickly like a balm. It leaves your lips very soft, but it just didn’t seem to last. I’d put it on when I first got into bed, and I’d find myself reapplying after I’d read a chapter or two, and again before I turned my lamp off. (I agree – my lips stayed soft and hydrated, but I couldn’t resist reaching for more, so that I could “feel” the balm on my lips ~ Tyna)
Honestly, I didn’t notice much plumping, but it’s hard to say when you first wake up in the morning. And as much as I love the scent, packaging, and the company’s mission, and really wanted this to be my go-to nighttime balm; I couldn’t quite get there. I certainly like this balm a lot, but it’s migrated from my bedside table to my desk at work. And because it absorbs so quickly it’s perfect to apply right before I put on my lipstick.

Cons
• I did not see a visible improvement in the fullness of my lips

I fell in love with the scent of this lip product. To me it smells like banana pudding, but not in an overwelming way. The scent quickly disappears once applied. It feels very silky going on and leaves my lips feeling very moisturized. While I usually prefer a thicker lip balm, this was a nice change. I also didn’t notice any plumping, but my lips felt soft in the morning after using this. I would buy this product again and keep this on my bedside table. 4 stars from me!
@pinkshaya – I laughed at you reapplying your lip balm in the middle of the night. I thought I was the only one crazy enough to do that! Even if Nighttime Lip Therapy didn’t plump as much as you’d hoped, the scent sounds lovely and the ingredients are safe and natural. I will consider giving it a try. Great review!
I really am addicted to the scent of this stuff, if I could get it as a lotion I think I’d be in heaven.
Nighttime lip-balmers unite!
I love that us middle of the night balm appliers are coming out of the closet! :-)
This does sound lovely, despite it not being as plumping as advertised. And the natural and green aspects are a definite plus!
I am in LOVE with this stuff. Serious l.o.v.e! I like the unique tube and the roller ball glides super smooth. And the scent is absolutely addictive! Sugary, but a natural sugar (not like those synthetic cupcake scents – bleuch) and it’s not overpowering at all, just this slight waft of total yumminess.
But it’s the formula that has me gaga. I will agree with @pinkshaya and @tyna, it doesn’t linger on your lips. But it doesn’t linger because it absorbs into your lips (unlike a lot of other balms that wear away and you don’t feel like they’ve left anything behind). This makes your lips noticeably softer. I put it on before bed and I wake up to softer lips. As a matter of fact, I’ve been up for 3 hours now and my lips still feel soft. And since I’ve been using it, I haven’t felt the need to obsessively apply balm all day long. My lips are smooth and chap free.
Plus, I really like how it feels. It has a slick feeling, kind of like an oil.
I haven’t noticed any plumping. Normally, I’d deduct a star for that, but my lips feel so good, I love the scent and the price so much that I’m overlooking this and giving it 5 stars!
I will certainly agree with @stef – the formula for this product is what really makes it stand out. I would give lip balm a three and a half stars. I really enjoy using it, but it’s not the best night time product, and I don’t get any plumping from it. So, while it is great, it simply doesn’t match up with it’s description.
PS – SO glad to hear I am not the only obsessive compulsive nighttime lip balm user. Maybe we should start a support group!
I have so many balms, different flavors, scents, etc. But this review makes me want this balm, especially for the scent. I have such a hard time getting my lips into a shape to wear stains without showing the chapped spots.
This really is the perfect product for you then. I LOVE applying this in the morning, when I start my makeup, by the time I’m finishing up and putting on whatever lip product I’m using that day it’s absorbed.

Add me to the “middle of the night appliers” club!
I love the shape of the tube, it’s so unique! And all the notes about the scent make me even more intrigued. The idea that the product is specific to night time use makes the consistency (and lack of balm “feel”) make sense to me. And it’s green! Can’t ask for much more than that.
This stuff sounds great. I am always fighting dry lips. The question is which one will I try first?
I had an up and down experience with my Own Nighttime Lip Therapy – but happily it all ended up a major upswing!
At first, like the others I was super intrigued by the cobalt blue tube with the tapered end. And I really love the roller ball applicator – it makes it so easy to evenly distribute all over lips without using your fingers. This is a germaphobe (as I can be)true friend!
I love thin, slightly oily clear sheen of this balm, but like @pinkshaya I was (at first) turned off by the quick absorption time and wanted to keep reapplying. But after a few uses I noticed that while the balm was quickly soaked up by my lips, the moisture and softness stuck around.
As far as the scent – heavenly! I didn’t smell banana pudding or pure sugar – to me this smells like a creamsicle! Whatever it is, the scent is a total yum (but super soft).
Finally, the biggie – the plumping. I have yet to see a visible plumping in my lips BUT after regular use I swear my lips feel plumper. Like they feel slightly swollen when I just press my lips… especially my bottom lip. Is this all in my head since I’ve been making a pint to use it every night? It’s too soon to tell but I’m hopeful! If I wake up with lips like Angelina I’ll be sure to let you all know!!
A solid 4 stars from me.
UPDATE! The peeps at Own appreciate our middle of the night lip balm obsession so much they’re having a contest over on their Facebook Page!

Calling all Midnight Rollers. The recent “We Heart This” post leaves us wondering how many of you are middle of the night lip balm appliers. Let us know here by Wed at 5PST and we’ll pick one to send a free Nighttime Lip therapy.
Great review, Shaya! I don’t like lip products that “disappear” quicly or need to be reapplied often, so this probably isn’t the balm for me.
I received this product + immediately started using it the day I got it in the mail! My lips are in a current state of NEED. Need hydration, softness, chap-free, less cracking, and the list goes on! It’s a constant battle for me. I really like this stuff the packaging is cute and I love the rollerball applicator. I don’t really notice a lip plumping effect but my lips do feel at ease when applying. This is definitely daytime friendly too. I’ve swiped some on before running out of the house because I just want to have “something” on my lips. Sometimes my lips still feel chapped after I get up…like when I get ready in the morning. Sometimes it feels like I never put the stuff on at all. But I think it still has a great formula. I will give this 4 stars :)
Hm, I’m a really BIG middle of the night lip balm applier…because I’m an insomniac. I don’t go to bed until 4 am so I do what I do during the day only with lip balm.
I’m really intrigued with this product, but I can’t use it (sugary scents = big, massive migraine from hell). Maybe they’ll come out with a fragrance free edition?
Until then, I’m sticking with my $2.98 Nivea A Kiss of Moisture!
