Get That Ocean Glow From Your Landlocked Bathroom

I’ve always been fascinated by anything with a marine theme – mermaids, seaweed, pirates – I can’t get enough of the stuff. Maybe it’s because my name was originally going to be Marina, but at the last minute my parents decided it would be too weird because my dad worked… wait for it… at a marina.

Why am I telling you this random fact? Because I have a new marine-based obsession, Phytomer Oligomarine Flawless-Skin Tonic ($46).

This deceptively simple alcohol-free toner hydrates and removes dirt, oil and makeup, calms skin and diminishes inflammation. As devoted as I am to my skincare routine, toner was my least favorite (and often skipped) step – but this take-it-or-leave-it attitude changed the minute I tried Oligomarine.

Have you ever spent a day swimming in the ocean, and marveled at the way your skin felt afterwards? It’s as if nature gives you a deep-cleaning facial, and the sea salt extracts all the impurities from your skin.

That’s the effect of Oligomarine. Not only does it whisk away traces of makeup my cleanser failed to remove, it leaves my skin soft and soothed, and a tiny bit tightened without feeling dry.

Phytomer aims to harness the benefits of seawater on the skin by creating marine-based products using ingredients extracted through natural procedures. In other words, even if you can’t take regular dips in the ocean, Phytomer’s products can bring the ocean to you.

Phytomer Oligomarine Flawless-Skin Tonic contains a bevy of powerful ingredients such as witch hazel (purifies, tones and tightens pores), Vitamin B3 (improves texture and reduces water loss) and sea salt. EPS AMM (“Absolute Marine Matifier”) gives skin a matte effect without dryness. It works so well, I think AMM should stand for “Absolute Marine Magic.”

I’ve been applying just a little bit on a cotton ball after washing and before moisturizing morning and evening, and my skin looks and feels extra-smooth. Although this product is recommended for oily, combination and blemish prone skin, my normal-to-dry skin is loving it. Even sensitive skin types and contact lens wearers can use Oligomarine without fear.

If you appreciate a multi-tasking product as much as I do, you’ll be happy to know that Oligomarine can also be used as a soothing aftershave and a waterproof eye makeup remover. And it has a light floral scent with an undertone of something wonderfully beach-y.

Now more than ever, I’m a believer in the power of everything marine. Maybe it’s not too late to change my name.

we heartsters – Are you ocean-obsessed too? And have you tried Phytomer?

  1. I haven’t tried Phytomer, but I’m definitely intrigued by your description. I just cringe spending that kind of money on toner, especially when most of it gets absorbed by a cotton ball and thrown in the trash (putting the toner onto your hands and patting it onto your skin can help reduce some of the waste).

    1. I hate unnecessary waste, too, so I’ve been using just a tiny bit of a cotton ball– like 1/4– and I don’t feel so bad.

    2. Oh yeah, I rip my cotton balls in pieces too!

  2. I will confess I also skip the toner skincare step. But,I am intrigued by the “green” ingredients. Great review @turboterp.

  3. I love Phytomer!! And toner! (It reminds me of a day spa, go figure)! Anything marine based always seems to work well for me, looks like I should try this ken out!

    1. As soon as I saw “ken” I knew you were on the phone :)

  4. I love the name story–Marina is really pretty, though def would have been weird w/your dad’s job! I love ocean-y products, and the ingredients here look great; the sea salt is intriguing, and makes a lot of sense to tone/clear skin. On a related seafaring note–have you looked at the Captain Blankenship product line? I feel like you need the Mermaid Hair Oil…

    1. This is the first I’ve heard of Captain Blankenship, and I certainly DO need the Mermaid Hair Oil! And their lip balm, too. What a cool line! Thanks for the tip!

  5. I always cut those thin cotton rounds in half when I’m using expensive toners–you get almost every last drop that way :)

Great post, @turboterp! Btw, Marina would have been a lovely name, but Melissa is pretty, too—you’ve got a song about you that’s actually good –“Sweet Melissa” by the Allman Brothers!

I think my name is one of the slutty girls in a really graphic rap song that I can’t remember the name of now. Wah waaaaah *sad trombone*

I was going to be “Emily”—I’ve actually had 6 different people randomly call me Emily or say I looked like an Emily without even knowing my name, so that’s bizarre. Anyhoo, I was born and my Dad decided he wanted to name me after his recently deceased mother–think a horribly old-fashioned German name in the vein of “Olga” or “Gertrude” (I won’t put it down here b/c it’s a security question in a lot of places). So he told my mom if he couldn’t name me “Insert horrible name here”, she couldn’t name me “Emily”. So I went nameless for 2 weeks. The hospital refused to release me until they picked a name. So, they wrote a few names on a Kleenex box and Krista was the winner. I was this close to ending up a Candace, which “Candy” as a nickname for a fat kid would have been bully gold on the playground, so I guess Krista isn’t too bad :/

    And I found my song:

–you know it’s good when they blank out half of the lyrics

    1. That’s the best name story. A Kleenex box! @Krista is such a pretty, kind-of-exotic name. I liked it even before I knew about the fab shoutout in Petey Pablo’s Freek-A-Leek!

“Sweet Melissa” is a nice song. My childhood neighbor, who was the president of a motorcycle gang, was big into the Allman Brothers, so I heard it a lot in my formative years.

I never thought of cutting those cotton rounds in half. Thanks for the great idea!

    2. You are indeed a Freek a Leek. Your parents must had some clue even at a young age!

  6. I really like facial products with sea salt in them. Clears me up like a day at the beach!
