Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant Review
As many we heart this readers may know, I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. With its lush vegetation it is aesthetically green, but many here live green as well. As a resident, I can say living green is not always easy. And there are some products that can be a challenge to locate in eco-friendly, effective formulas. I am telling you the dirty sweaty truth.
If you’re looking to stay clean and dry while living green, you might want to check out Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant. They hail from my neck of the woods in Portland, Oregon, and I’m always happy to test local products. This natural company wants to “change the way people think about deodorant”.
Starting with the packaging. The health conscious Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant ($9) comes in a two ounce glass jar that should last 3 or 4 months with daily use. You use the deodorant by taking a pea sized amount and applying it to the underarms with the provided spatula or your fingers.
The product melts into your skin with body heat just like coconut oil. It works just fine, but I admit it does take a bit of time to get used to using deodorant in a non-traditional stick or roll-on form.
You may be reading this and think ok, application aside . . . if it is natural, what the heck is in this stuff? Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant is full of safe, high quality ingredients to keep you dry. They use arrowroot powder to absorb moisture with baking soda and hops extract to prevent the growth of odor-causing bacteria. Cocoa seed butter gives it staying power.
For the skin, there is shea butter which makes for a smooth application, while moisturizing and protecting the delicate underarm. Plus essential oils are added for antibacterial, deodorizing and healing properties.
Available in five scents, I tested Bergamot + Lime and the Fragrance Free formula. Hands down, Bergamot + Lime was my favorite. I never thought that wearing deodorant to would double as a aromatherapy treatment. The lime scent seems to have a calming effect, which helps my stress level.
Pros:
• Made in the USA
• Quality ingredients
• Natural, effective formula
• Fabulous scents
Con:
• Unique application

This sounds like something I’d like to use! I know I would love the Lavender Sage one and Bergamot and Lime sounds great too! Amazon here I come! I would like to see this with a better application method.
The application does take a little bit to get used to. I do prefer a “stick” style deodorant. But, I suppose the glass jar that can be recylced is a bit more earth friendly.
I’ve been curious about this brand for a while @hao9703! I admit the application at first squeaked me out – but then I was all like “it’s touching your own darn clean armpit – what’s the big deal”.
Happy to hear it works and smells great – because it is the scents that first caught my attention. I hate “powder fresh” scents and water-y/shower-y scents – so of course, I get mostly unscented deodorants – but I kind of want them to smell – I just want them to smell good!
Unfortunately, deodorant won’t cut it for me–I need legit antiperspirant :( And I don’t like applying any products with my fingers.
I love anything from P-town so I will have to try this!
I live in the Portland area as well. I’m allergic to so many deodorants. I’ll be looking into these!
I am intrigued by the bergamot and lime fragrance…I kinda hate the scent of most deodorants…
I always wonder about constantly putting all these chemicals on everyday from my deodorant and I like that this eliminates that…but I have to say, application would be hard to get used to and I do need an antiperspirant too.
Loved finding this article. Think that deodorant as it’s currently produced is one of those consumer products that we’ll look back on in 20 to 30 years and be shocked to find out what we were applying directly to one of the most important sweat glands of the body.
Also, hao9703, if interested in reviewing another PNW company (we’re in Vancouver, BC) and testing out the only made-in-America organic cotton hairties on your thick hair then we’d love to set you up. They can be viewed on our website at kooshoo.com. Let me know.
Keep up the great work!
