There are few things in life that excite me more than fashion. I love shopping for fashion. I love shows about fashion. I love reading about fashion. And of course, I love wearing fashion.

Things do get trickier as we get older, though. It’s more difficult to pull off trendier looks, and comfort suddenly trumps eye-popping. As I segued from club life to home-and-work life, I have refused to lower my style bar. I have tried, however, to up my sophistication level. But big designer prices? I can’t. I’m so happy, then, to have found Shabby Apple, located at the intersection of Chic and Reasonable.

A quick look through their website (well, let’s be honest, “quick” isn’t going to happen) will reveal gorgeously presented vintage inspired clothing with the edge of modern design. If you are looking for pants or athletic wear, you’ve picked the wrong site. Shabby Apple is an homage to a lady-like past.

Most dresses seem to fall in the very reasonable hundred-dollar range, and look as though they were created by someone who knows, loves and understands women. It wasn’t too surprising, then, to find that Shabby Apple is owned and operated by a company consisting primarily of women. It is also nice to note that their love of women seems to also be extended to their employees who are given flexible schedules and generous maternity leave.

I very happily received the Shabby Apple Desert Modern Dress ($82) for review. Living a So-Cal casual life means I’ve got a lot of jersey in my closet. And since maxi dresses are de rigueur out here, I’ve got plenty of those, too. All my jersey and all my maxis cannot compare to my Desert Modern dress, however.

The dress is a heavy gauge fabric that lends itself well to draping, fitting close to the body by the natural waist, then falling generously at my ankles. The top is double thick, with kimono-style sleeves, giving the illusion of a capelet, while offering the support of a tailored blouse or jacket. A heathered charcoal in color, this is a neutral that won’t be a bore.

There is so much to love about this dress, I hardly know where to start, but I’ll begin with comfort. Honestly, I might have thought to wear this to bed since this dress is more cozy and comfortable than my pajamas. Next, I must mention that the cut of this dress makes me feel slimmer (don’t we all want that?) Also, the thick fabric does not betray any rolls or soft spots of which one may be self-conscious.

Lastly, this dress is a canvas begging to be written on! With the color a neutral base, styling options are plenty! I added a bronze leather sash, high-heeled peep toe booties, a cuff and a long necklace, but I can’t wait to try it with a choker or neck scarf and some flip-flops! This, folks, is a quality item that can be reinvented over and over again.

There is so much more I hope to buy from Shabby Apple (their swimsuits are to die for, and it is almost that time of year). I noticed that they are offering a 10% discount on your first purchase if you sign up for their email list, and there is free shipping for orders over $150! Excuse me while I find my credit card…
