Dress It Up, Dress It Down – One Bag to Rule All of Your Outfits

As I get older (34 is literally right around the corner for me) I’ve realized that the items I add to my wardrobe have to be multi-functional. Can I wear this to work AND on the weekends? Can I dress this up AND dress it down? How many things does this piece coordinate with in my closet?

When I was younger I’d buy something, perhaps a purse, just because I liked it, not thinking of how I would wear it – and then it would sit in my closet, gathering dust and unused. So I was excited when I was sent the Emily Satchel from Shop Suey Boutique with the task of showing the bag dressed up and dressed down.

I’ve reviewed a couple of items from Shop Suey Boutique on my blog and I love their items. The online store is a never ending source for constantly updated “small batches of designer inspired handbags, jewelry and fashion accessories.” Every piece I’ve worn has been fun, good quality and still practical.

With the Emily Satchel ($76) I should say that the size looks deceivingly small when really it’s super roomy. I fit my iPad, bulging makeup case, two eyeglass cases and another pouch full of tech accessories inside, with two interior pockets left for my badge and keys. AND there are still two zippered pockets on the outside – one I use to store my cell phone so I can easily access it.

One of the things that I think really makes a bag versatile is how you can wear it. I love a structured satchel for work but what I loved the most about Emily is that she comes with a detachable crossbody strap! That made it absolutely perfect for weekends and running errands.

To dress the bag up, I added it to a work outfit. When dressing for my job, I typically have a uniform of a full skirt or pencil skirt, scoop neck top, a peep toe or wedge heel and then great accessories. The structured shape and classic black make this an easy option for a polished work bag. It’s so classic that it will go with anything in your closet and I like that.

For casual, dressed down wear, adding the strap makes it so versatile. It’s still a classic shaped bag but it becomes a bit more utilitarian with the strap. It turned more into a tote while I was running in and out of craft stores and then wandering the famers market for hidden gems. It even adds a bit of polish to my weekend wear making it the perfect bag to go from brunch to business!

So in my book the Emily Satchel is a winner. If you have fall shopping on the mind and want to pick up an of-the-moment bag or accessory, make sure to check out the goods at Shop Suey.

  1. That satchel is adorable, and it does look good both dressed up and dressed down. Having a lot of pockets is key for me when it comes to a handbag–I like one for lipgloss, one for keys, and one for my phone. I prefer to have one for my wallet also. The Shop Suey website has a huge selection of reasonably priced purses–thanks for sharing them with us! I’ve already bookmarked them ;)

  2. Super cute bag and outfits @dwj1 – I especially love the work outfit. Growing up I always heard not to mix black and blue so (except for blue jeans and a black tee) I usually do not mix them. Love the blue necklace against the black shirt and bag! And the Emily Satchel get big points in my book for have the attachable cross strap – it takes the bag from work only to weekend staple as well.

  3. I’m such a fan of convertible bags! When a single satchel can go from professional to casual I’m pretty much a goner. Too many of my bags are just a little bit too dressy or a little bit too casual to be multipurpose, I really ought to change that. Quick question- is the bag leather? The materials aren’t listed on the Shop Suey site.

  4. @dwj1 – Great review and thanks for introducing me on to this great purse. For Fall, I am looking for a new pair of boots and some necklaces (probably silver) that look good for casual weekends and work.

  5. @dwj1 –Great review! I love your smile in the one photo–lights up your whole face :)
I’m a huge fan of crossbody bags. Inevitably, I’m caught carrying a million and one things or have my hands full and I’d rather not worry about dropping my purse or dealing with it sliding down my arm–I prefer to put it on and forget about it. I also want to be able to fit everything but the kitchen sink in there and I feel that a crossbody bag distributes the weight in a less painful manner :)
    Great post!

  6. That bag is adorable! I love that it doubles as a cross body bag too!
