Any make up junkie worth her salt should be well versed in everything Smashbox.icon My make up vice of choice are eye shadows; show me the latest colors or palettes and I’m loading them into my basket. And the number one brand of shadows strewn across my vanity is Smashbox. Their tri-colored pots of shadows and liners are my daily go-to’s and desert island must-have’s. So I was jumping for joy when we received the entire Untamed Summer 09icon collection from these cosmetic geniuses. Don’t worry, you can jump for joy as well, since we’re giving away one set of the whole collection to a lucky we heart this member.

While hogging the Smashbox display ay my local beauty store, I’ve noticed not just my fellow beauty junkies salivating over the goods. A healthy number of novices and “normal” beauty shoppers as well are always coveting the latest items and classic favorites from Smashbox. I think there are three key reasons that all types of shoppers are drawn to Smashbox:

The Colors – Smashbox is always at the forefront of the color spectrum. From cheeks to eyes to lips, Smashbox offers the latest trends in unique and beautiful colors that women are drawn to like moths to a flame. They top that off by creating staple colors that are universally flattering on almost all skin tones.

The Quality – Once they have you in their clutches with the pretty; the savvy shopper will soon notice the high quality of a Smashbox product – true and rich pigments, blendable formulas and long lasting products are a few hallmarks of this brand that you will appreciate after just one application. Word of mouth and fawning press only helps keep Smashbox at the top of everyone’s shopping list.

The Packaging – Smashbox always has simple, no frills, long lasting packaging that lets the product speak for itself. I’ve yet to have a clasp break or other packaging mishaps with anything from Smashbox. Additionally, I’ve traveled far and wide with them and have yet to have a single product shatter to dust while in my bag or suitcase.

All of these qualities are true of the latest Smashbox Summer 2009 Collection, Untamed. This safari-inspired collection with colors directly from the tropics is full of smoldering, exotic shades and creamy, sheer textures for a sizzling summer look. Our we heart this review team will be along to leave their thoughts in the comments (and someone is going to win them all).

For now, here’s the skinny on this limited edition collection:

Waterproof Shadow Liner Trio in Savageicon and Exoticicon
Highly blendable, bold eye liners and shadows in crease-proof, water-proof formulas that last all day. Wear the lighter colors all over as a sheer base and smudge the bolder hues (a deep purple in Exotic, a rich and lush green in Savage) along the lash line for a little drama. A clever, air tight, second lid keeps these colors creamy fresh all summer long.

True Color Lip Gloss in Fleshicon and Rawicon
Two limited edition summer glosses sure to please every color lover. Again, the formula is sheer, so the shades are flattering on everybody and can be layered for more oomph. Untamed glosses are available in Raw (a deep ruby red) and Flesh (a subtle nude), which I believe is the perfect, fresh from the pool or beach lip color.

Untamed Creamy Cheek Coloricon
The ideal summer blush – this sheer, creamy blush contains Vitamin E and is the perfect combo of pink and brown for a dewy, sun-kissed glow without a hint of orange fakery. Can be used all over face, even on lips, and layered as needed.

Untamed Double-Ended Eye Brightenericon
Something tells me this brilliant dual purpose pencil will soon become a permanent fixture in the Smashbox catalog. Use one end of the creamy, golden hued shimmer to brighten the corners of tired, shadowed eyes. Use the other end to highlight brow bones, contour cheekbones and add some plumpness to lips on the cupid’s bow. Subtle, blendable highlighting that can be stashed in a bag for touch ups during summer days – I’m in love with it.

  1. I chose to test the 2 lip glosses (but, of course!) and the creamy cheekcolor.

The glosses: The colors in the tubes are a bit off putting, especially Flesh (it looks like concealer). But this was a great reminder that what you see is not always what you get. ALWAYS swatch before you decide on a shade. Flesh turned out to be absolutely lovely. A sheer hint of nude, just enough to cancel the pink in your lips just a bit and give you a shiny, nude hue. Raw looks like it’s going to be more of a fall shade in the tube, a deep reddish brown. But again, it’s sheer and deepens your lips just enough to give you some depth without looking heavy at all. Perfect for summer! Both of these shades have no shimmer and a long lasting, smooth formula.

The Untamed blush is a hit too. I love cream blush, but it seems I meet more that don’t work for me than do. This one does work, and works really well! Again, the color viewed in the pot looks like it’s going to be way dark (like a slightly lighter reddish brown than Raw). But I’m starting to see a pattern here, this collection is SHEER (did you see that lightbulb go off over my head?) The blush goes on like silk, it’s really creamy and doesn’t drag across your skin like a lot of cream blushes can. The color is divine, imagine a flushed tanned cheek. I love this.

  2. I received two wonderful products from this line…the True Color Lip gloss in Flesh and Waterproof Shadow Liner Trio in Savage. I’ll first start with the lip gloss. It is a very natural nude color like the name implies. It can be worn alone for a natural look or layered on top of your favorite color for a little change. I heart Smashbox lip glosses because they are very moisturizing and not even a tiny bit sticky. While I probably wouldn’t pick this color for myself, it really is a nice change from my usual colors. I especially love the look I get from it layered on top of my favorite lip stain. Next on to the Waterproof Shadow Liner Trio. The colors are gorgeous…I tried the savage trio(the one pictured above with the green in the trio). These go on effortlessly. My only complaint would be that I wish there was more product. I know I will empty this little pot super quick because I love the colors so much. Smashbox is one of my favorite lines and this Untamed collection doesn’t disappoint.

  3. Oh, one more thing, the Untamed cheek color on your lips with Raw lip gloss over top is a thing of pure beauty! I highly recommend the combo.

  4. I received the Waterproof Shadow Liner Trio in Exotic. (The purple one above) It’s a really nice and creamy shadow. I usually use a powder, so it took me a few tries to get the right amount on the brush. At first I was getting way too much and I looked like a teenager trying out makeup for the first time. Once I got the right amount on my brush, it looked really nice on my eye. I love how you can smudge it to get an all over look or just use the dark colors as a liner. I have been wearing the purple a lot lately and I haven’t noticed creases in my shadow either. I do rub my eyes a lot because of allergies, and noticed that when I used it as a liner, it was gone in the corner and underneath my eye, but it’s the same with all liners for me. But, it comes in a nice size container with two lids, one being air tight, that is perfect to throw in your bag for touch ups throughout the day, and no worries that it will spill!

  5. I tested the lip gloss in Raw and echo what Stef said about the color – when I opened the package I thought oh this color is right up my alley, but b/c it’s reddish brown I’ll have to save it until fall! Not so. It goes on much more sheer than it looks in the tube. Not that you can’t make it deeper – I did that with a similar colored lip liner that’s also a favorite – and it will now also be perfect for fall. Without the liner, it just darkens the lips a little and adds a beautiful glossy glow, but no shimmer. The formula is so smooth and buttery, not sticky at all. It lasts quite awhile and the smell reminds me of vanilla cake batter – delicious!! 5 stars!

  6. I had the chance to try the SmashBox Untamed Summer ’09 lipgloss in Raw. Let me tell you, I felt sexier just opening the box! The tube has turquoise and chocolate brown (I love that color combo) tiger stripes on the wand. Perhaps Raw was created to be a Ruby Red color, but to me it reads as a chocolate brown color with a ruby undertone. I was able to swipe on a quick 1st layer with the sponge-tip applicator.

The lip gloss went on smooth and easy. The texture thick but not sticky. It immediately gave my lips a sexy sheen with a hint of color. The more I layered, the deeper and richer the color became. It doesn’t have the best staying power but it is a wonderful make-up treat.

  7. Smashbox Untamed- Creamy Cheek Color
Stef was so excited for me to see what I had in my bag of tricks, I mean goodies this past week. I was too! Tada! Inside was the new cheek color I’ve been dreaming about for the summer. It goes on so smoothly; it’s creamy alright and it’s sheer formula even has good ole vitamin E in there to aid in its blending into your cheeckeroos! Wow, another made up word! Let’s just say my face looked like it was lightly sun kissed by the sun! You know that healthy look you get from the sun! UNTAMED CREAMY CHEEK COLOR is beautiful and stayed on into the evening too.. I had a definite glow- no, I’m not pregnant! You can tell it’s made with luxurious ingredients. The packaging was a big hit right off the bat. I save a lot of the packaging of various products, and this is one of the best yet! Its so inviting with its oh so cool animal print. I was thrilled to see the huge mirror too. I love mirrors in compacts.. It makes life so much easier when it comes to fixing your face no matter where you are. It wasn’t’ hard for me to comment on the brown, green and turquoise colors they choose for its packaging. I think they did a great job on their design. You might say I was untamed as I opened the box and immediately applied this to my cheeks! One more thing, the price is reasonable too. I would buy this for $24.00 without hesitation. I know I’ll wear it all summer long! Loved this immensely!
I even used this on my lips.. I know what some of you may thinking.. but it really looked awesome.. Try it, you’ll like it- it works, trust me!

  8. Two for Two is always good when it comes to keeping score! So yes, I also find the new Smashbox UNTAMED LIP GLOSS in FLESH irresistible! I’m more of a natural nut when it comes to things I put on my face, especially my lips, so I really liked it. Did is say that It’s quite a crowd pleaser too? A-huh, the sticky finger ladies at my office really liked it too, and now I’m not sure where it has gone! It sure doesn’t look like a concealer once on your lips- not for a second! Just like Stef said!
It’s been on my smackers for several hours and they feel great and my lips look fantastic with this on. It’s a true Lip Gloss for you lip-gloss lovers. Here’s my added side bar just for you. You should try putting the creamy cheek color on under this gloss- Wow wee, did I love my lips even more!
Anyone who knows Stef also knows her love of lip-gloss is beyond an obsession.. but with that comes her vast knowledge of it. If she loves this you know it’s gotta be great, true and right on. I think we should re-name her to “Ms. Lips!”
In my little opinion, the packaging says it all, “Pounce on this ferocious lip gloss before it escapes!”
They are NOT kidding. It’s so choice, and very nice! You put this on and it pretty much stays PUT until you happen to bite it off or
better yet, kiss it off. Your lips will defiantly be inviting..

  9. I was crazy lucky enough to try out the Smashbox Untamed cream blush, the lipgloss in Raw, and the Double-ended Eye Brightener. It was seriously like a dream come true when I saw those beauties. I had been hunting for a sheer brown cream blush for what seems like forever. I have every blush shade in the rainbow, but for some reason, most companies don’t do brownish blushes. On me, a very pale gal, a sheer brown actually looks very natural. It also doesn’t make me look as ruddy as a pink or a red shade can (although I LOVE those shades, too). Smashbox’s Untamed cream blush is

  10. Okay, so my fingers aren’t working, so I’ll continue my review here…Smashbox’s Untamed cream blush is the perfect shade for summer. It goes on sheer and evenly and looks like I’ve caught just the right amount of sun. The lipgloss in Raw, a sheer brownish color, makes my lips just look BETTER. It’s just the right pop of color and really complements the blush. The double-ended eye brightener has been a lifesaver. My peepers have been taking a beating lately and this double-ended beauty really helps me look more awake. One end is a golden nude and the other end is a silvery pale pink. I use the gold end on my eyes and the pale pink end for contouring and highlighting my face. It really looks great dabbed on my Cupid’s bow. I now need to hunt down the eye trios because I’m in love with this collection!

  11. I have both the Untamed blush and the Shadow/Liner Trio in Exotic.

I wasn’t sure how to start out with the shadow/liner trio (which I’d been eyeing for like a month but afraid to buy because of the following) The pans of color are so small that it seems hard to get a finger in there to smear it on your lids, but a brush sort of defeats the purpose of a cream color! I liked teh colors–so pretty! But average staying power for a cream shadow…definitely not waterproof.

Now, the blush, on the other hand, I have NO complaints about! Yes, the color does look quite scary…a dark dirty red, but two layers of its SHEER goodness give you a fantastic bronzey-blush on your cheeks. I definitely will have to try it out on my lips too!

  12. I tried the Waterproof Shadow Liner Trio in Savage (the one with green). I was a little intimidated at first because the colors seemed a little bold for me and because I had never used anything but pencil liners before this.

My fear of too-strong, ridiculous looking color was completely unfounded. Even though it looked a little overwhelming in the pot, it looked amazing on my skin – a little less saturated so I wasn’t overwhelmed, with just a hint of sparkle. The colors compliment each other so well and they are easy to blend together. Even though I had a little trouble with the eyeliner at first, once I got the hang of applying it, it was really easy and I loved the results.

When using all three colors, I really love using the green as the liner – it has such a great impact! The colors also look great by themselves too! This was actually my very first smashbox product and I think it’s safe to say that I’m an addict now!

  13. I was so excited to try this summer line! I received the Shadow/Liner Trio in Exotic and the Lip-gloss in Flesh. Loved them both – and how the whole line has such great tropical colors but makes them wearable and flattering on the face. The creamy eye trios were great to work with – I’m a believer in brushes – so I went right to my small ones to apply the golden brown medium tinted color all over. Then added a dot of the lighter beige under the arch of the eye. Finally, I used a stiff, slanted brush to apply a medium size line of the deep plum along the lash line. Took me 3 minutes and my eyes were done! The plum is great for blue eyes – makes them pop. And is such a pretty, striking shade.

I also like the flesh lip gloss so much! It’s that, no pinky color nude that everyone has been wearing in the mags and on tv, but it’s much more wearable then most versions. It’s super sheer, with subtle shine, so your lips look nude, instead of sickly. I’m already a fan of Smashbox glosses – my current fave is the True Color Pout in Starlit. Smashbox glosses have great staying power and the right amount of stickiness (cause you need just a little bit). Oh and they have a yummy vanilla smell! They’re the best.

  14. I thanked my lucky stars when I got Waterproof Shadow Liner Trio in Exotic and the True Color Lipgloss in Raw.

All beautiful colors. Earthy yet glamorous.
The eye trio has three of my favorite colors, cream, brown and purple. I have to say without primer these didn’t pop for me. And even with the colors are definitely not as bold as they appear in the pot.
That being said, I was kind of relieved. Because they go on lighter it adds just enough hint of color to do the trick. And the creamy texture blends in so nice that there is no chance of looking cakey.

Great staying power, but again, expect a much milder version of the colors you see once you apply them.
If your going for bold, I would go with a standard powder, and not a cream.

The lip gloss is my new favorite. The color is definitely a brown with red undertone on me. It’s a very flattering color that I think could work with any skin tone, it’s just very pretty! It goes on nice without an overly sticky sensation. Stays and stays and like Corinne said, it even smells good.

This line is lovely and as always with Smashbox, it’s well made and the packaging is as great as the product!

  15. I was testing the Smashbox Untamed Lip Gloss (Flesh color). Looking at the product, I wasn’t sure if Flesh would be my first color choice, but I like neutrals…so it was okay. The product itself is a liquid gloss with a Q tip-like slanted applicator on the wand that allows for a more accurate application vs. previous lip glosses that I’ve tried with what looks like a nail polish-type applicator that tend to fan out during the application process. I did my normal beauty routine…concealer, blot, lip liner, pressed powder and THEN the lip gloss and the color is actually really great blended with the lip liner and looked really nice. The only complaint that I have is the longevity of the product. It was gone by the time I finished lunch – which, I guess is the problem with glosses vs. the all-day wear that I usually favor. But overall I really liked it and would give it a 4 out of 5, taking a point off for the length of wear.

My friend buys smashbox regularly and raves about them. I would LOVE to try out more of their products to see if they live up to the hype!!!

  16. I was lucky to get to test 2 products from this gorgeous looking collection (I can’t believe you guys are giving it away! Someone is going to be VERY happy.) The Double ended eye brightner and the shadow trio in Savage (the one with green and brown)

The Double ended eye brightner is one gem of a product. I kinda don’t know how I lived without it! The colors are amazing, a light pink with a touch of tan to it and a totally un-garish gold. It’s perfection on your eyes, either smudged as a shadow when I’m in a rush or under my brows when I’ve got time to do the whole nine yards. And the color are subtle enough that you really can use them as highlighters; on your cupid’s bow or on the apples of your cheeks. It’s really creamy, blends well and is totally beautiful. This is one of those products I want to run out and buy another one right now and just stash it!

I’m a bit torn with shadow trio. The colors are beautiful, pretty sheer but really nice. I wore them all day without a bit of creasing either. Which is saying a lot. I find the majority of cream shadows do crease on me. But…for the size of the product (tiny) they are expensive ($29). I didn’t like that you couldn’t get your fingers in the pot to use them, you have to use a brush (unless you have baby hands, in which case, I’m sorry). Now, the packaging is off the chain (is that what the kids are saying these days?) The whole second interior lid to keep the shadows from drying out, clever. Did anyone notice that the bottom of the package is clear so you can see the colors without opening the package? Genius. But I don’t know, I think I would have like a bit more product and one less whistle.

  17. I have never received a Smashbox product that I only ever used once or twice and the two products I received are no exception. I was the lucky recipient of the trio in savage and like most everyone else I would have liked larger pots. I’m a brush girl all the way so it wasn’t because I wanted to smear my finger in it, but because thy are so pretty I wanted more! No creasing for me either even without a primer and that’s a big deal for me because usually without a primer it just slides right off in a few hours. The colors looked a little scary a first I thought to myself “ok, kind of dark for a summer collection”, but of course the smarties at Smashbox knew they made perfect sparkly sheer colors with a sexy dark but amazing liner color! I also received the double ended eye pencil, it was a good day for me when I got my package : ) I love this pencil I’ve been having trouble sleeping lately and it’s starting to show on my eyes that have always had some dark circles and I had started using a white shadow to help brighten them up. This however is a pain in the butt at 4am when I am getting ready for work on only a few hours of sleep ALAS this pencil arrives, a little dab in each corner a a bit on the nose and at least I think I look ready for the world. Thanks Smashbox for two more great products!

  18. Let me start by saying that I was really excited to try the Exotic Untamed Waterproof Shadow Liner Trio. I had used Smashbox’s gel liner in the past and it was nothing short of amazing in a bright amethyst color.I thought this appeared to be similar.
Well, it’s not similar, but it is quite good. The Exotic collection is perfect for the brown -eyed set (like me). It consists of a champagne-y color, a lilac shimmer shade and a dark purple (also shimmery).
I wouldn’t use the dark shade in place of something like the gel liner pot–it’s not nearly as heavily pigmented–but it works well for a more subtle, natural liner. The champange color is a perfect highlighter under the brow or on the full lid for those days when going bare-eyed doesn’t quite cut it. The lilac works well on the lid, but is pale enough to use as a highlighter, too.
I do have a couple of minor issues with this product, however. First, there is no small applicator brush. A small, stiff liner-type brush would be helpful for when you want to use the dark shade for a liner. Second, it’s TINY. I can’t imagine this will last long. Enjoy it while it lasts; it is a nice trio.

  19. I was thrilled to recieve the double ended eye brightener! I finally found the ideal one. Awhile back i had my make up done professionaly and they used a white liner on the inner corners of my eyes. I was amazed by how much of a difference this little bit made. My eyes totally looked brighter! But as i shopped around for one, it was always too white or too shimmery and it looked like i was always going out to a club or something, when i just wanted a subtle enough difference. When i got the Smashbox, i tried it right away the next day. I was going to a bbq during the day. It went on fabulously! i just did the inner corners of my eyes lightly. And that’s exactly how it went on and how i wanted it. For night i applied it a little bit heavier and it was perfect. I hope Smashbox puts this in their year long line and not just for this limited edition. i will buy this again and recommmend it everyone. As usual great job Smashbox!
