A drugstore gem to tame your hair’s biggest secret

Suave Scalp Solutions Anti Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner photos: we heart this

There are certain things you learn in the workplace. One, most people have dirty little secrets they don’t want to own up to. Two, you never know what happens behind closed doors. Three, you never know who is aligned with who.

My dirty little secret is that I have suffered with seborrheic dermatitis aka dandruff since my teenage years. It is visually painful and ugly because your scalp literally can rise to the surface during the day and flake off on your clothes. How is that for honest?

The itching (or the urge to itch) can be excruciating. As an adult professional that tends to wear a lot of black, it is just down right humiliating and embarrassing. I have been to the dermatologist numerous times, tried endless products to rid myself of this awful plague. In short, I have been at war.

Enter Suave Scalp Solutions Anti Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner with nourishing coconut and shea butter. When Stef sent out an email to all of the writers and asked if anyone had dandruff and would be willing to admit it and test the products, I thought “WHY NOT?” I am currently trapped using an expensive salon product that does not work that well and frankly there are not that many good options for my problem out there.

Suave Scalp Solutions Anti Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner The first thing I noticed about the Scalp Solutions Anti-Dandruff Shampoo ($4.29) is that it smells good, a mild coconut scent. This is a major revelation because you would be surprised how many dandruff shampoos out there smell like tar, coal and other things you do not want your hair to smell like. These same shampoos also dry the heck out of your hair and make it feel like a brillo pad with zero moisture.

This shampoo is different, the texture is smooth and creamy. Used in conjuntion with the Scalp Solutions Anti-Dandruff Conditioner my hair felt great after each shower. There was no problem detangling, styling or drying. I did not have any itching or any major scalp exfoliation/ flaking. The active ingredient has Phrithione Zinc 1%, to help prevent the itching and dandruff and like a miracle from heaven; it works.

Another thing I really appreciated was that the directions were honest. Suave said to use these products two times per week or as directed by your doctor. I liked the fact that I was not asked to commit to everyday. I used them every other day and had good results. No, I am not completely cured from the dandruff plague. But, it improved my situation and the price is very affordable.

Pros:
Smells good
Affordable
Accessible
Did not dry out my hair
Did not strip the color out of my hair

Con:
Still have some dandruff

  1. Maybe you can try sheagoodness growth serum … people seem to havegood results with controlling SD.

  2. I give this a solid five stars! It smells good, my hair likes it– and so does my scalp.

I love that the price is so reasonable and I can buy it almost anywhere.

  3. Holly–I appreciate your honesty with this review!!! :) I do have some problems with dandruff and have for awhile. It is especially difficult because I have dark hair. I love light coconut scents, and getting a product that works for less than $5 would be a miracle! I totally know what you mean about dandruff products smelling terrible.

This sounds wonderful! Kinder, gentler dandruff treatment- what’s not to love? And it doesn’t strip color? Faaaaaaaabulous!
Sadly, though, I have looked for this in the Midwest, and it’s nowhere to be found:(

  5. Ahhhh @hao9703 , as a fellow dandruff sufferer (well, okay, eczema actually, but the end result is the same!) I’ve tried practically EVERYTHING to banish my flakes. And you’re right, so many leave my hair like straw. That, and the smell leaves a lot to be desired. So anti-dandruff shampoo/conditioner that smells good AND leaves my hair nice and soft?! Fantastic! And it’s from SUAVE!? I love it. I’ll have to be on the look out for this one!

  6. Thanks for your honest and as always, informative review, Holly! This is a great alternative for a dandruff shampoo and I’d try it in a second from your review. In fact I just may, for a “clean-up” shampoo. One of my favorite hair stylists when I was younger gave some great advice I’ve always remembered, but forgot til now that it was actually Sauve she suggested, as a perfect choice to use about once a week. She said all those great expensive shampoos we use still cause buildup on our hair that needs to be stripped out by something cleansing and without all the fillers. So if this doesn’t also strip the color I’m purchasing it tomorrow!

  7. I like to read some reviews before buying a product. Thank you for yours.

  8. As someone who has suffered with dandruff for years, I can honestly say that I have tried every product out there. After having numerous failures, I finally switched to Head and Shoulder’s. While this worked most of the time, it didn’t help with the itching and scratching. Instead I was left with the occasional flake and annoyance. The solution was using PEPPERMINT! Do your research – peppermint oil fights dandruff! I settled on the Made from Earth Peppermint Conditioner (because it has a pure peppermint oil in it), and it works wonders. I have been using it for 6 months now and have not seen 1 flake at all.

More importantly for me, though, is that the itching is gone, almost instantly. I can’t believe I’ve been missing this for years. I highly recommend this to any guy who is looking for a way out of it all. No more flakes, no more itching, just pure clean and refreshed hair. The Made from Earth Conditioner has peppermint oil in it, so its exactly what you need to get rid of the dandruff.

Just as an added bonus, it has a great smell that lasts (my girlfriend loves the smell hours later). Highly recommended!

  9. This was my go-to shampoo and conditioner. Plain and simple, it WORKS!! However, I have been unable to find it, so I’m guessing it’s been discontinued? Any ideas on alternatives to this?

    1. I have seen it either in quite awhile. I cannot recommend a substitute either!
