I’m not proud to admit it, but for many years I was a total hair care snob. While I had no problem shopping the drugstore aisles for makeup, bath and/or body products – I drew the line at hair care. I was convinced that only expensive hair products could give life and shine to my fine, split end prone hair.

Happily for me (and my wallet!), I was recently asked to test the latest from affordable hair gurus TRESemmé and learned just how wrong I was. For the last two weeks I’ve been using their amazing Split Remedy collection exclusively, eschewing my extensive and expensive products and I discovered it is possible to find high-end hair care in the drugstore aisles.

This new line, comprised of five products, promises to deliver that straight from the salon, freshly cut look by “repairing up to 80% of the splits you have in just three uses.” That’s a pretty bold claim, and as a sufferer of dreaded split ends and the flyaways that accompany them, I was excited to give the entire collection a try. So let’s a take a look at each Split Remedy product.

We’ll start with the Split Remedy Shampoo and corresponding Split Remedy Conditioner, my favorite items of the bunch. Both items have a salon-fresh and slightly fruity scent without the artificially fake, overpowering sweetness found in many drugstore brands.

The shampoo has a creamy consistency and a quarter size amount lathers up into a headful of foam. The same amount of the even creamier conditioner worked easily through my hair all the way to the ends and then rinsed cleanly away.

When I got out of my shower, I was amazed to see my hair looked and felt smoother than normal and a comb glided through my wet tresses without snagging – before I even tried the treatment products!

There are two other big pros; the bottles are LARGE, holding 25 ounces of product (enough to last me a few months) and the solid black and white containers make for easy identification when in the shower.

After a washing and conditioning with the Split Remedy line, there are three styling and treatment products to help create locks that are smooth as glass. You can mix and match these items to suit your needs. All three may not be necessary, especially after the use of the fab shampoo and conditioner.

I found that my fine and thin hair only needed a few spritzes of the Leave-In Conditioning Spray to look shiny, sleek and healthy. My hair is prone to tangles and this lightweight spray worked wonders on wet hair, letting combs and brushes slide through and making styling a breeze. Plus it continued to keep my hair snarl free and frizz-less all day long.

For those with more serious split end and snagging issues, the Leave-In Split End Conditioning Treatment is the solution. A few pumps of this creamy formula applied all over clean, wet hair conditions each and every strand, locking in smoothing moisture and shine.

A small amount can even be used on dry hair when you’re having a bad frizz day. And with the dog days of summer and high humidity almost upon us, this effective yet lightweight treatment could be a lifesaver.

Finally, to really keep the ends of your locks under control check out the Split End Sealing Serum. This clear sealer surprised me with it’s lightweight touch and non-oily formula. While nothing can totally repair already split ends, this serum helps to bind the ends of your hair and (as promised) gives that fresh cut, clean line we all love. Just apply this serum to towel dried hair, style as normal and you’re good to go!

Overall, I was very impressed with the Split Remedy collection. After just two weeks of use, my hair is noticeably looking more healthy, shiny and sleek with nary a split end in sight, while my piggy bank is getting heavier from all the money I’ve saved by skipping the expensive products. Talk about a win-win situation!

  1. As soon as my current shampoo & conditioner run out I’m definitely going to run to the store & try this. I am so tired of frizzy, summer hair. I want to be able to wear my hair down for parties & barbecues & I think this stuff will get my hair ready in no time! Thanks for the great review

    1. You should definitely give these TRESemme products a chance @repippin – my hair isn’t too frizzy but it does have split ends and fly-aways and as mentioned I noticed a difference after just one wash. My hair was so nice and sleek! And you can’t beat the price. Hope they work for you too!

  2. I ran out of shampoo recently, so this might be my next purchase at the store! I have really really bad split ends (like, I need to go to my stylist ASAP). Great review.

  3. Thanks for having this product reviewed. I just hope it will not damaged my hair. Surely, i’ll give this a try.

  4. First, let me just say that I love, love, LOVE the scent of TRESemme products! It’s totally perfume-y and synthetic, but I love it.
I tested out the Leave In Split End Conditioning Treatment and it’s seriously fantastic. While I don’t have much of a problem with split ends I DO have some serious frizz and this product really helped with that. The Leave In treatment leaves my hair smooth and shiny. Bonus- I don’t have NEARLY the same amount of tangles by the end of the day, even after a ride with the top down in the convertible! All this is because each strand of hair is individually protected, locking out humidity (which swells the hair and can lead to more breakage) and locking in moisture (keeping the hair soft and flexible).
TRESemme is both affordable and quite effective. I highly recommend! 4 Stars! (It would be 5 if the formula was a little more green, but you can’t always have everything!)

  5. UPDATE: So I picked this up after reading the reviews, I’ve used it for about 3 weeks, & I LOVE it! My hair looks so much better now. Not perfect, but greatly improved, as in, I wore my thick curly hair down on a Tallahassee August night after not getting a haircut for 5 months. My boyfriend keeps hiding my hair ties because he wants to play with it all the time. I just use the shampoo, conditioner, and split end treatment. It really has helped stretch the length of time I go get a haircut.
