Review of Spring 2010 Shades: Crash, Binge, Mildew & Oil Slick

In the late 1990s, I remember walking through Nordstrom and stumbling across a new cosmetics brand with an intriguing name. “Urban Decay?” I thought to myself, “That’s interesting.” As I walked closer to the display, I distinctly remember thinking; “I’ve never seen colors like this before at a makeup counter.” And then I remember thinking, “Great. I already love this line so much…that means it’s never going to last.” So much for my cosmetic industry predictions, right?

Fast forward a decade or so, and not only is Urban Decay still around, this company is thriving and flourishing and has made a name for itself among makeup elite, tweens just starting their makeup journeys, and everyone in between. Aside from their always-intriguing names, it’s the colors, textures and outstanding quality of Urban Decay products that have made them a sought-after line of covet-worthy proportions.

So when I received one of the legendary Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils for review recently, it felt like coming home after a long journey around the world. I’ve tried a zillion eyeliners in the past decade, but all it took was one swipe of this pencil to remind me why I was drawn to Urban Decay in the first place.

There are several reasons makeup junkies around the world covet these eyeliners. If you’ve never tried a 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, let me just say that it’s like swiping a little piece of silk across your eyelid. There is absolutely no tugging or pulling with this pencil. Like the name says, this pencil literally glides across your skin. It effortlessly deposits beautifully pigmented color across your lids that’s easily blended for the first 30 seconds or so, and the best part? Once set, the water proof color stays put. Seriously, it does not budge. Even on my super oily skin, I can get it to stay put on my lower lids (the trickiest area of my eye for any liner) by applying it sparingly and blending it out a bit.

Oh, and did I mention the beautiful array of shades that are available? Say goodbye to the usual blacks and browns. UD has got colors that will make you “oooh” and “aaah” for days. They recently introduced Four New Shades (above) for Spring 2010, which the wht review team received for review. I tested Mildew, which is a stunning moss/kelly-green shimmer (bottom right), which was serendipitous as the corresponding eye shadow just so happens to be one of my favorites from UD.

I really appreciate that UD often makes the same shades available in both eyeliners and eye shadows. I can’t count how many times I’ve fallen in love with a shade of eye shadow and thought, “Wow, I really wish they made this in an eyeliner.” Well you don’t have to wish for that with UD because, chances are, they do! Urban Decay, how do you manage, year after year, to get everything right?

In addition to Mildew, the wht team received Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils in the three additional Spring 2010 colors; Oil Slick (top right) a medium intensity black with silver sparkle, Binge (top left) at last, a true navy from UD, this one has a slight metallic sheen (and is rumored to be the “it” shade of the spring season) and finally, Crash(bottom left) another hue inspired by one of UD’s all-time favorite eye shadows, it’s described as a deep eggplant with silver glitter. Originally Crash, Mildew and Binge were only available as part of LE gift sets. Thanks to The Powers That Be at UD for adding these stand-outs to their regular 24/7 line!

  1. Urban Decay does make the best eyeliners around! They offer gorgeous colors (love the new spring shades). And the formula is out of this world. It just glides on but doesn’t smudge or wear at all (and I am very oily). And the application is very easy. I have always hated eyeliner. I could never seem to make it look right and it always irritated my eyes. Not so with Urban Decay! A novice can make it look good. 5 stars from me!

  2. I adore urban decay. They always had such fantastic colors.I haven’t used UD in a long time, but those eye pencils are gorgeous and I think it’s time to give UD a whirl again.

  3. Like you, Recessionista, I’m a longtime fan of Urban Decay. I don’t know how I’m going to choose between Binge and Mildew; guess I’ll have to get them both!

  4. UD really does make a great eye liner. I usually get the mechanical pencils from other brands because I have found they go on smoother than a regular pencil. In the past I have scratched my eye lid and felt like I had to go over the line a million times before I saw any color. This is not true with UD. It literally glided on just like the name promised! And the color you get in just one application is amazing. I tried Crash and fell in love. I have been wearing a new eye shadow in coco colors and the Crash eyeliner went with it perfectly. I also love the sparkle that’s mixed in with the plum color. It really livens up my look giving me a nice oomph to my normal everyday makeup. Also it really does last the entire day. I tend to rub the crap out of my eyes (staring at a computer all day will make you do that) but this eyeliner was still there at the end of the day. And when I was ready to wash it off at the end of the day, it came off easily without giving me raccoon eyes. 5 sparkling stars from me :)

  5. I love Urban Decay 24/7 pencils. I usually stick to cream liners or even liquid liners because they usually have better staying power than pencils. These pencil eye liners are like the anti-pencil liner. They glide on like a cream and stay put. I have oily eye lids, so I get some traveling after about 8 hours of wear, but hello, that’s still remarkable.
I was lucky enough to receive Mildew, which is a shimmery olive green shade that really makes my hazel eyes pop. I’ve been wearing a lot of earth tone shadows lately and this slick of olive green really brings out the green in my hazel eyes. It’s a great everyday shade, but a little more special than a brown or black liner. LOVE IT! Now I need to try the Binge shade because I have a weakness for navy liners… :)

  6. Everything you hear (or read) about 24/7 pencils is true. I just don’t think there’s a smoother eyeliner around! It’s insane how buttery they go on, it just flows across your lid. No tugging or pulling. And the amount of color they deposit is out of control, with just one swipe as well!

You’d expect with such a creamy product that the longevity would be terrible. I don’t know how they do it, but it’s not the case with these. They stay put all day, no traveling at all.

Ok, on to the really good part, the colors! In the name of science I had to try 3 of them (she says whilst pushing her glasses up her nose). Mildew is my new go-to green. The perfect amount of metallic, a deep, yet vibrant army green and it pretty much looks good with everything. Binge follows suite, a dark but bright navy with the perfect metallic consistency.

Oil Slick, black with silver glitter, was the wild card for me. I’ll admit, I’m a bit scared of glitter (so honestly, I have to tread carefully with a lot of UD’s more glitter-tatsic shades). But Oil Slick has just enough to be a really beautiful show stopping, ADULT glitter that looks fabulous with grey shadows.

Is it excessive that I want every shade 24/7 that they make? 5 glowing stars!

  7. You cannot go wrong with this product. Everything everyone is saying is true. This is not an urban legend — it is Urban Decay at its finest!

If anyone is in the market for eyeliner I would strongly recommend that they start with Urban Decay 24/7

  8. I had Binge, and I’m not gonna lie…I was scared. I don’t do blue. Eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, nuthin’. And blue sparkly eyeliner? REALLY?

Well, yes really. Yes, yes YES really! I took the leap and I’m very glad I did! Binge’s deep navy color went on VERY smoothly, almost like a gel liner without the wonky brushes to deal with. It had sparkle, but it’s subtle and lovely. And it went well with my dark skin and brown eyes, better than I thought! The navy doesn’t scream blue, it’s more like, “Am I black? Am I off black? I might be a weird purple, you don’t know…”
Though I may not be a convert for the color, but I am for the formula of the eyeliner. The best part is its staying power. I try not to rub my eyes, but I always seem to have that streak of eyeliner across my index finger from me rubbing my eyes after yawning or a good episode of Grey’s Anatomy. This stayed SO well; I’m very impressed.

I’m a loyal UD buyer for their mineral makeup…I’m going to have to add their eyeliner to my list!! 5 stars!

  9. Yay!! I am *thrilled* to see that I’m definitely not alone in my UD 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil love! Even for a drugstore/cheapie cosmetics lover like me, this is one of the true splurge-worthy products that is an absolutely must-have if you’re an eyeliner fan.

Krista: You totally called it about Mildew and hazel eyes! I have hazels eyes as well, and it really brings out the green in a crazy way. Have you tried Mildew eyeshadow? If not, I think you would love that as well for your hazel peepers!

And it probably goes without saying, but five huge stars from me. :)

  10. Recessionista—Thanks for enabling me! I’m going to have to hit my local Ulta or Sephora to check out Mildew the eye shadow now…it will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine…*cackles with demented glee*
    Somebody please stop me… :)

  11. I am embarrassed to say that this is the first item I have ever had by Urban Decay Cosmetics. Please don’t yell at me girls! Occasionally you’ll hear me say I have been living under a rock. Ehem… Well, since I have received the amazing 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Mildew, I have had a hard time not applying it everyday! It will suck you in, I swear! It’s outstanding in many ways.. The color Mildew is a gorgeous green.. Reminds me of the emerald city! It stays put all day and night. What I really like is how creamy this one is.. Maybe that’s why they call it Glide ON! Right on Urban Decay! I have played with this too, meaning I put more on top of the application to get a very striking look. I LIKE IT !!This is a very special eye pencil, and I still cannot believe it has taken me this long to have one! Check them out next time your out and about shopping.. Fantastic! I really feel confident in offering this product five stars!

  12. Krista: LOL!! Sorry, but when you said you have hazel eyes…it just had to be done! :) Mildew is a great lid and/or crease shade and it also looks amazing foiled for an intense pop of color. I used to use it as an eyeliner but…now I don’t have to! Yay! I’d love to know what you think of the shadow when you get it!

Irene: I could never yell at your for that! It’s great that you’ve joined the party–better late than never, I always say! :) I’m so glad you’re loving this pencil, and next I think you need to try some eyeshadows. They are truly amazing as well.

  13. I will Recessionitsta! I wont’ even tell you how close the Urban Decay counter is to me from where I sit during office hours.. Like it’s not even a minute away if I stroll to it!

  14. These are FABULOUS! I love mine in Covet. It looks so pretty with a neutral eye on top and a line of it on the lower lash line… Hmm, this could be a post in the making! =D I’m super excited for Mildew and Crash!

  15. Recessionista- Oops! I clicked on the commentluv thingy at the bottom on accident. I thought it meant I loved your post! :-)

  16. irene: Uh…I’M SO JEALOUS! lol. But I have to say, I’d be in the poor house for sure if I was *that* close to a UD counter. :)

Sandy: lol! No worries. :) I thank you for expressing your love for this post! And I’m glad I’m not the only one who deems these liners splurge-worthy!

Cynthia: I agree with Stef–can you describe Covet? If I remember correctly, it’s sort of a blueish-teal green, right?

  17. For many years, I only wore eye liner for the evening and stuck with liquid liners. Mainly due to the fact that every pencil liner turned into smears under my eyes – even “waterproof” formulas. So I skipped the daily liner and went to liquid for night looks. Then, I discovered the UD 24/7 Pencils! Halleluiah – a super smooth pencil (that I could smudge as needed) that truly Did Not Move! I have been a believer ever since.

I got to test two of the new Spring 10 colors – mildew and binge. Like Alyssa, I was a teeny bit skeptical of binge – I love blue, but it can be a tricky eye shadow or liner shade for me. I have pale blue eyes and most blues seem to clash with more than enhance my eyes. Not this deep navy pencil – the rich blue and subtle sheen are dark enough to define my eyes and just blue enough to draw out my eye color. I heart it! If you are a blue-eyed girl who can’t find the right blue shade – try Binge.

While I fell head over heels with Binge, I do not want to slight Mildew! I found this similar to Binge in that the color is just the right hue – rich enough to shape eyes with just enough green to stand out and be noticed. I found both pencils work really well with my normal neutral look – wearing browns/beiges/creams shadows with one of these liners for a pop of color is so easy and I love the look. An easy five stars!

  18. We’re talking major eye “Pop” with Urban Decay 24/7! Love love love this liner! Translation: I heart this, and so will you!

  19. Recessionista, Next time your in Costa Mesa, California I’ll take you there! :)

  20. Stef, Covet looks like a brighter forest green to me.. Mildew seems a bit darker.

  21. I’m just branching out into UD. I love their original primer potion best. The only thing I hate is the darn UDPP bottle! I’m waiting for the weather to warm up a bit before I dig into Eden (matte primer + midwestern cold weather dry skin = big, bad mess).

Krista–I’m wearing Mildew, the eyeshadow, and it’s great. It brings out the grey in my brown-grey eyes. It’s fabulous. Mine came with the Show Pony palette. My favorite eyeshadow though is either Snatch, Toasted or Flash. Snatch is a great neutral with a twist, Toasted is another fab neutral but Flash….oh, Flash. I’m always so scared to use my Flash because I love it so much in the pan!!!! It’s so pretty!

  22. Oh, I’m a HUGE fan of UD, and most especially the pencils! I used to live in eyeliner, but I hated applying it – the tugging drove me crazy, and then I always had to reapply it. Thank goodness for these babies, I swear, they make it so easy, and the shade range is stunning. I own about 10 of them. I want them ALL. Best thing is, they’re well worth the money, they go such a long way!

  23. Like many.. or I think All :) of you I also have hearted Urban Decay pencils for awhile! They glide like no other.. seriously these liners are so easy to use, you barely need to press down and the color just glides on… and these new colors.. what a fab four!
I was lucky enough to test.. and now I covet.. Crash.. the deep eggplant with hints of silver glitter. When it says deep it is.. almost black looking until you look close and notice it’s like rich deep purple velvet.. GORGEOUS color.
And right up my alley.. as a blue eyed gal, who loves purples, this is my current fav. The glitter is subtle..adding a bit of sparkle..a hint.. and it’s perfect.
Five stars from me.. If you have a desire to try any of these. Do it! You will not be disappointed!
Great write up by the way Recesionista :)
Looking at the pic of the colors.. I’m kinda falling for Oil Slick.. I think I may need it!!

  24. So I tried Binge, and I’m definitely all-for absurdly bright shades, so I was pretty pumped. Let’s just say I agree with everybody that these liners TOTALLY lived up to their reputation!!! The color is gorgeous and really intense, with the perfect amount of sheen. Now I’m dying to try the Mildew! The Binge looks really pretty lined over a brown shadow, too!

  25. I received Binge to try and I love, love, LOVE the color! It’s so beautiful!
The color goes on smoothly, the color remains true, and it really is pretty worthy of it’s cult status.
On the down side, I have pretty oily lids. The liner creased/smudged by mid afternoon unless I used the UD Eden primer before hand. Also, I can’t for the life of me get ANY of the color to impart on my water line! *sigh* However, I have yet to ever get any eyeliner that will line my water line successfully. It could just be me :P
Still, the 24/7 liners get a 4 out of 5 for me. Loves it!

  26. I am a black eyeliner fiend and so was very happy to test Oil Slick…but I’ve gotta say, you girls are making me very jealous I didn’t test the colors!! Oil Slick is pretty darn wow-worthy though. Black/slate with a beautiful shimmer to it. Now, I wear liquid eye liner and have for 20 years, so nothings going to permanently take me away from that for the vivid and lasting color, but UD pencils come as close as possible and are all I use when I do want a pencil. Of course it glides on and lasts pretty well. What I like about this pencil is that when that black goes away – because it does on my oily lids (under eye, too), I am left all day with the shimmer still there. And it’s so pretty for an extra effect. It definitely does stay better with primer potion, but does still fade even with that eventually. If I was a pencil fiend this is the only one I’d ever use!

  27. irene: Thanks a deal! :)

Katie: I believe there are instructional videos on YT about how to cut the bottle open and get the remaining product out! I have heard that if you do this (though I’ve never tried it myself) you can get almost another 3 months of product out of it. Crazy, huh?

Nicole: Wow, you have 10 of these babies? So jealous!

    Christy: Thank you SO much!

Lindsay: Binge looks pretty over a brown shadow? That’s all you had to say! It shall be mine… :)

Amanda: Have you tried Styli-Style in black for the water line? For some reason I have the best luck of all with that one on my water line.

melinda: Sorry to hear this fades on you–have you tried applying a very thin layer and then blending it out? I’ve got super oily lids too and I can never get a liner to last on my lower lids, but if I use this method it works like a charm!

  28. I love these also! Just saw them in person last weekend, and I’m obsessed. I want to own the 24/7 eyeliners in every color–they stay put, they come in fun colors, they have GLITTER! What more could a gal want?!

  29. Recessionista–I have cut it open and I’m rationing what remains. You do get a lot out, I admit. It was a pain to cut it open and I had the cut on my left index finger to prove it; cutting open tubes and the clumsy aren’t a great match. I swear the plastic is a centimeter thick.

I think UDPP needs a complete package rehaul over the slight revision of angling the wand to supposedly getting more product out. Cute, yes, but impractical, especially for clumsy people such as myself. Or, they could put a “Please Cut Here” sign where one should cut and make those two areas thinner!

  30. Question to the testers. Does your metallic cover/cap for the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil (when placed on the backend of the pencil) stay on without falling off? Mine practically pops off and rolls off the counter. It would make sense to have them fit snug while applying your liner.. Perhaps mine is just not fitting on?

  31. I bought a set of these for a friend for Christmas. Really, I wanted them for myself. I was worried about them being too glittery for me (at 40), but I’m happy to see that they are pretty subtle in the glitter department. I do love UD’s Midnight Cowboy eyeshadow and it sounds like it would go great with some Binge or Mildew.

  32. I’ve never been a huge eyeliner fan because it always looks too harsh on me, so I usually end up using my darkest shadow as a liner, with the help of a brush! I have, however, used Urban Decay’s liners and they are the only ones I use if I do attempt a more dramatic eye. They are soft, forgiving, and have the best colors. This post makes me want to go dig out my old pencils and play with them again! I’m also anxious to try some of the new colors… they look gorgeous!

  33. This is seriously a great eyeliner. My eyelids are oily and nothing stays on but this liner. And I find that pencils are the easiest way to line for people who don’t always wear eyeliner. They are much more forgiving. The glitter in these is not scary either. It adds more of a sparkle to your eye then chunks of glitter. Another great thing is they are easy to sharpen. Many times with pencils you get that hard wooden edge that jabs into your eye so you try to sharpen it more and then a chunk of the eyeliner falls off but with the UD one, it just sharpens easily. Also I agree with Irene. I hate when the cap will not fit on the end. I mean you need both hands and you can’t always find a place to lay the cap. Now one of my pencils the cap fits on, another it falls off. So take what you will out of that.

  34. Okay, We find one small fault! I hope they fix that!
