Glosses that Dance to the Beat of Every Drummer

Is there anything more fun than lip gloss? Not for me. Not right now. Why? Because new to the scene is Urban Decay Hi-Fi Shine lip gloss in twenty colors and four finishes (at a totally reasonable $20 a piece), and we got to swatch and try all of them. Paaarrr-taay!

We all know that Urban Decay is the patron saint of makeup glitter and funky colors, as well as the creator of the uber-popular Naked palettes, So while fun and funk is abound, there is always something for everyone. The Hi-Fi Shine Lip Gloss is no exception.

For the Hollaback Girl, Meet the Creams…

From nudes like Fuel, to coral Snitch to violet Jawbreaker to the blushing, mauvey Backtalk; these all have opaque, hi-density color with as-promised hi-fi shine. The gloss is only slightly tacky-just enough to stick to your lips. No need to layer lipstick underneath, these bring their own pigment. Snitch is already in my bag as my everyday, summer-ready gloss on the run.

Jawbreaker: classic purple
Savage: electric pink
Bang: bright orange-red
Snitch: bright coral
Rapture: rose-mauve
Beso: deep pink mauve
Backtalk: mauve-nude pink
Fuel: light neutral nude
1993: medium brown

For those who saw the light, here are the Sheer Creams…

These colors are fewer-there are just three: Naked, Obsessed and Midnight Cowgirl. Sheer (with just a hint of the color in the bottle) and simple, these are great day staples and super for layering. I’m loving both Obsessed; a lovely, wholesome pink tint with subtle shimmer, and Midnight Cowgirl; a nude tint with a gold-bronze shimmer.

Naked: nude-pink with pearly pink shift
Obsessed: baby pink

For the Dancing Queen, I introduce the Holographic glosses…

These have sheer colors made 3-D with multi-faceted glitter shine. Fireball is a stand out, a medium rosy-peach base with darker pink glitter. Also Candy Flip, a pale lavender base with silvery blue/pink glitter. Alone or layered on a lipstick, the dance party is ready to go!

SPL: holographic candy pink with iridescent sparkle
Candy Flip: holographic lavender with blue-pink sparkle

For Those About to Rock, I salute you with the Metallized…

These glosses combine the opacity of the Creams with the heavy metal glitter of the Holographics for when you just can’t get enough. When too much feels like never enough reach for Big Bang, a hi-impact fuchsia pink with hot pink glitter. If you are feeling your inner Goth, reach for the dark brown gloss with green-gold glitter they call Shadowheart. I gotta say, Shadowheart is everything.

Goldmine: bright gold

The colors and finish selections are vast here, but one thing they all do is condition your lips. These Hi-Fi glosses contain vitamin E to nourish, while peppermint oil provides both refreshing tingle as well as natural lip-plumping action! Add a little vanilla and these glosses are tasty, too (at least my dogs think so; always extra kisses when I’m wearing this.)

The flexible foam foot application is cushiony-soft, making for the most comfortable lip shine application ever. I mean, I didn’t realize lip glossing was an uncomfortable affair until I tried these. Who knew? The applicator also makes loading on the gloss super easy.

To sum it all up, UD Hi Fi Lip gloss is comfortable to apply and wear, quite tasty, and nourishing to boot. The wide selection of colors and finishes means there’s something for you, your daughter, and your grandmother. I dare you all NOT to find your perfect gloss-mate in these.

we heartsters; I KNOW you’ve tried these! Tell us about your favorite in the comments.

  1. I have a handful of these and I love the formulation–it feels like you’re applying a cushiony, liquid pillow made of mint and cookies (the smell is heaven) and dreams to your lips. I have Big Bang and Dirty Talk from the holographic offerings and they are shimmery gorgeousness with just the right amount of pigment. Maybe a hint too much sparkle for a trip to the grocery store (at least if you’re me and live in a bizarro world where nobody wears makeup), but great for when you want a little drama in your gloss–they’re great for transforming a lipstick and the sparkle really pops with a base color underneath. Out of the cream formulation offerings I have 1993–a color that takes me back to my teenage brown lip phase (pro tip, pair with Wet n’ Wild’s 666 lip liner for full 90’s effect). Beso is a perfect everyday berry shade and something the pale ladies with dark hair kinda need. Backtalk reads as my lips but better–I add some lip liner to amp the color up a little bit. I also have the sheer formulation in Naked, but I need to pair that with a lip liner because it reads as clear gloss on me. Overall, I love the feel of these–they don’t feel tacky or sticky, just moisturizing; I even love the slight coolness from the mint. I know you aren’t surprised, but it’s another winner from Urban Decay!

  2. Yes indeed, this launch is a gloss-lover’s dream! There is absolutely something for anyone here. I love the packaging– so pretty and modern, easy to find in my makeup bag, and lightweight, too. The squishy doe-foot applicator really is the most comfortable wand I’ve ever used. The gloss formula is so slick and comfortable, and the minty vanilla tingle seals the deal. That’s funny about your dogs giving you extra kisses, @sherrishera — mine do the same! I tested two of the creams, Rapture (a natural rosy pink that Debbie Harry would love as much as I do) and 1993 (which is the best possible version of my own 90s brown lip obsession). @krista , thanks for the liner tip! Can’t wait to give it a try. I agree, UD hit this one out of the park!

  3. I tested Jawbreaker and Snapped and was in love with everything about these two gorgeous glosses. The packaging was beautiful and functional (Urban Decay is so good at this!) and the gloss itself had the perfect texture, scent, glossiness, and pigmentation. I got soooo many compliments on both of these, I’m already eyeing a few other shades! xoxo

  4. I tested SPL gloss and Backtalk, which is a really pretty mauve. The gloss is fantastic for summer and lasts. They are both a really rich formula and go on easy. They’re also packaged really well, with a useful flat applicator. These are a really good option for a lightweight lip and I definitely want to get more.
