I’ve always been from the mindset that the term “sheer lipstick” was an oxymoron that should be banished to the likes of “jumbo shrimp” and “act naturally.” Why in the world would anyone want their lipstick to be sheer? Don’t you choose lipstick over gloss specifically for its opacity?

Plus, since I rarely meet a sheer lipstick that doesn’t just look like weak lipstick, it’s never really been my cup of tea. Until now.

Meet Urban Decay Sheer Revolution lipstick ($22). Continuing the riot created with the original, opaque Revolution formula, Sheer Revolution takes every preconceived notion I had about sheer lipstick and smashes it. Don’t I feel dumb! But my lips look great, so it’s ok.

We got to check out four of the ten shades (each based on existing UD shades), which give the perfect flush of super shiny color.

Sheer Liar – medium nude pink
Sheer Obsessed – medium, cool orchid pink
Sheer Slowburn – bright orange-kissed cherry red
Sheer Shame – medium, bright berry

The formula truly is a thing of beauty. Think of your most buttery lip balm. Now, make it more buttery. Seriously “creamy” isn’t creamy enough a word. These are the most moisturizing things to cover my lips in ages (surely thanks to the Shea butter and jojoba, olive and babassu oils in the formula.) You just want to keep applying these because they feel so good.

But here’s the kicker; you don’t have to keep applying them! Normally with a product so creamy you’d expect it to fade quickly; stray to the outside of your lips, get eaten off with lunch, etc. But this formula really hugs the lips. I didn’t need a touch up until at least 5 hours later.

It also contains something called Maxi-Lip™ which is said to define lips and make them look plumper and fuller. I’m not sure how much plumper they looked, but they definitely FELT fuller. It’s a very plush feeling formula, like a gel-creme hybrid.

In addition to looking pretty on your lips, they’re pretty to look at. The slim, light purple metal case has an organic shape to it rather than just being smooth (similar to ripples across water), with two debossed touches on the cap. I notice these things!

Believe me when I say, these sheer lipsticks are awfully good! we heartsters, do you say you want a (Sheer) Revolution?

  1. I usually prefer matte lipstick, but this sheer liar looks so pretty.
I should give it a try one day!

  2. I love the original, opaque Revolution lipsticks, and understand your initial wariness about this sheer version. Your rave review makes me want to run to the store to check out the colors in person! I think I DO want a sheer revolution!

  3. Where do sign up for this revolution? You had me at “your most buttery lip balm”!

Also? I am not a bold lip color lady, so the sheer color intrigues me. Not to mention UD has a pretty great track record in taking the natural look to a whole new level. Can’t wait to check these out – particularly Sheer Liar – in person.

  4. I’m heading over to the UD counter at Macy’s and will look for these to see if they strike my fancy! The Sheer Liar, looks creamy!

  5. Sheer Liar just went to the top of my list, I want that right now! I have always had issues with sheers staying put so I am very happy to hear these have some staying power!

  6. I am such a huge fan of Urban Decay Lipstick!! I have several of the regular Revolution but can’t wait to try the sheer shades. Gorgeous!!!

  7. Sheer Liar and Sheer Shame are both right up my alley…I’ve actually never tried any UD lipsticks before, might need to pick up Liar though.

  8. Very pretty and anything that can last 5 hours and feel like butter is a definite win! I’ve never tried Urban Decay’s lip products, but your review makes me want to run out and buy the whole line! I actually like sheer colors (bright color coward) and these seem perfect!!! I’m loving the Sheer Slowburn and Sheer Shame.

  9. I adore sheer lipsticks! I’m a tinted lip balm kind of girl and sheer lipstick is like a more polished version of that. I’ll definitely be looking these up during my next Sephora run–Sheer Slowburn and Sheer Shame look like they’re right up my alley. Great post, @stef! :)

  10. I felt the same way about “sheer” lipsticks, but I’m totally in love with how these look in the swatches!! And I love Urban Decay–the products and especially the packaging.
