Synergy Eye Cream, Sheer Moisture and AHA/BHA Cleansing Gel
I confess that I only started taking care of my face this decade. As a teenager in the late 80s, I moisturized with Vaseline. In college and in my 20s, I slathered on the same heavy body moisturizer that I used on my dry legs. Eventually, I figured out that my skin was oily and that I needed a better-suited facial moisturizer. Over the years, I’ve switched from drug store to department store brands and back to help keep my skin moisturized and relatively shine-free. When the opportunity came up to try Renee Rouleau’s Sheer Moisture with Algae Peptides, I thought maybe I had finally found the one!
Renée Rouleau is a skin-care expert and esthetician with 20-plus years in the business of helping women achieve great skin. ( we heartsters may remember we checked out her Anti-Cyst Treatment to rave reviews).
Sheer Moisture was designed for women with oily skin who also wanted an anti-aging product. Perfect for me since I’ll be turning 37 in less than a month. (Most of the anti-aging lotions I’ve tried were too heavy and caused breakouts.) It contains ingredients to aid in firming the skin, to fight sun damage, to smooth fine lines, even surface wrinkles and to deliver moisture into the “intercellular matrix of skin.” Between the expertise and the ingredients, I decided I was going to be doomed if Renée’s lotion can’t help my face.
I began testing the Sheer Moisturizer at a prime time – when the temperature and humidity in New York City was reaching high levels and I was having PMS. In other words, my face became an oil slick. Every morning I washed with an oil control cleansing gel, and followed up with the Sheer Moisturizer and Renée’s Synergy the Eye Cream. I was amazed at the weight for I was expecting it to be a little lighter, but it absorbed quickly and didn’t feel heavy on my skin. My skin felt moisturized and a little greasy, but it didn’t look it. Unfortunately, this didn’t last. By the end of my workday, I was just as shiny as I woke up that morning. On the positive, my face did feel smoother and younger while my pores appeared much smaller. And while I can’t be sure if it was the product, I didn’t get any breakouts like I normally do around that time of the month. The pure clearing properties of this moisturizer seem to be doing their job!
Next up, the Synergy Eye Cream, which has ingredients that are supposed to fill lines, make the skin look younger, and neutralize free radicals. I was happy to see this lightweight and luxurious cream does what it promises; the skin around my eyes was firmer and the appearance of fine lines around the eyes was visibly lessened. I used a little dab on my ring finger morning and night, and never felt like I had just put cream on the delicate skin like I do with many eye creams. This eye cream is recommend for those with sensitive skin and my eyes appreciate it! At nearly $60 a bottle, Synergy is definitely a big skincare splurge but worth the outlay – get it if you can afford it.
The review team also received one more item to test, the AHA/BHA Cleansing Gel a sulfate-free, deep pore cleanser that contains Salicylic, Glycolic and Lactic acids to get down into clogged pores while Jojoba beads gently work to exfoliate and smooth the skin. I love a good exfoliator – from body to face, my bathroom cabinets and shower is filled with scrubbie cleansers. I was really pleased (and still reach for) my Anti-Cyst Treatment, so I was excited to see what Renee Rouleau would offer in an exfoliating face cleanser. I admit I was also a little apprehensive – you know when you discover a great product and the next thing you try from the same line isn’t quite as good? I’m happy to say, the AHA/BHA Cleansing Gel exceeded my expectations – and I absolutely love it. I’ve been doling out the last few uses from my bottle and will happily pull out my card to order more.
This face cleanser is a godsend for the oily or acne prone! First, I adore the fresh citrusy scent – it’s the perfect amount of fragrance, and rinses away with the cleanser. This gel has a nice thick consistency that forms a low foam that holds up well as you massage it into your face. The Jojoba beads are plentiful and strong enough to get into pores and whisk away dead skin, but gentle enough not to scratch or irritate skin (even areas that are breaking out – I’ve used this with great results during hormonal flare ups).
I also appreciate that you don’t need a lot of product to wash your face – you’ll get a lot of uses from the bottle. After using this gel, my skin feels refreshed and smooth and seems to absorb lotion better too. A very enthusiastic five stars – those Allure readers know their stuff!

Oh, Tyna, that sounds great. I’m always looking for a good cleanser. Some of the ones I’ve tried with beads in it leave a crunchy residue. It’s like I can never rinse enough! I am also a fan of citrus scents.
FOLLOW-UPAlso, I’ve been using the RR moisturizing faithfully since I received it to review–approximately 3 months. The positives I mentioned, firming and reducing the appearance of pores, continued. The other day I was having one of those “why me?” moments in the mirror, and I noticed my face looked lovely. It looked youngish. It didn’t seem to be showing as much age as it usually does.
Now that the humidity has lessened and the air has chilled, the moisturizer did a good job of controlling the oil. I still wasn’t thrilled with the oil control, but it was much better than it was when I started using it in late August/early September.
Rakisha – it is great! And it rinses away super clean ( I mostly use it in the shower however). When I’ve used it at the sink, I’ve never had issues findy crusty beads and residue in my hairline.
