Fab Travelin' Bags

Tomorrow kicks off the start of what feels to me as the official start of summer, Memorial Day weekend. Not only is it time for swimsuits, full body SPF and Italian water ice, it’s also the start of travel season. From day trips to weekend getaways in the city, camping out to a full week beachfront vacation; summer is a traveling woman’s dream season. I’m a firm believer everyone should carve out at least one trip per summer. Even stealing just a day or two away, lazing in the sun, or telling stories around a campfire, it does wonders for both mind and body.

Almost as important? A functional, durable and cute bag. Having one or two quality pieces not only makes packing that much easier, they also add to the excitement of a trip (I’m always happy to have a reason to pull out my LeSportSac weekender) and (I swear) can improve the quality of your trip. If you’re looking for a few new travel pieces for you or the kids, or maybe a gift for a new graduate or good old Dad (Father’s Day is around the corner), we’ve got some fantastic pieces to suggest, with a few great deals along the way. Let’s get packing!

A roomy, expandable weekend bag is a must. I use mine for weekend trips to Stef’s house, as my single piece of on-flight luggage and for quick getaways of all types. My suggestions (clockwise from top left):

Dads – Things Dads will love about this roomy, comfortable eBags Backpack Weekender in Burnt Orange: its bright but not flashy orange accents, the “suitcase-style entry” for packing that converts to a backpack for carrying, the interior and exterior pockets and the Lifetime Guarantee this bag carries. Go ahead, treat this bag rough – it can take it! $79.99

Grads – The perfect bag for for the young jet set, this LeSportsac Weekender Duffle is stylish, roomy and very durable. Avaialable in tons of prints and colors for guys and gals of all styles, this lightweight bag can fit a ton of clothes inside, all your accessories in exterior pockets and still fit under an airline seat. $108.00

Kids – Kid’s of all ages will love this Khaki Vintage Mini Backpack. We’re not talking 90’s fashion trend mini backpack, just a perfectly kid sized backpack for weekend trips to the Grandparents and all those summer sleepovers. $24.95

You – Words can not express how much I love this Geo Travel Bag in pool from SaltboxNYC – the shape, the print, the color! Alas, I already own two fab duffle bags and can’t justify another. If you can, it’s your lucky day! This fantastic heavy weight canvas bag retails for $190, but, thanks to Real Simple we have a code for 25% off this bag and the entire Saltbox site. Enter the code SIMPLE25 at checkout and snag the bag for just $142.50.

I once purchased a piece of luggage at an outlet, which quickly developed wonky zipper issues. For years I crossed my fingers as I handed it over to the airline, hoping it would survive the flight. The day it came down the gangplank with rows of duck tape surrounding it was almost a relief. While the zipper had split sometime midflight, every item was accounted for (thanks Southwest!), and I could finally run out and buy a new, high-quality (so worth the price), zipperiffic, and larger piece of luggage. Also on my wish list was a bright, but not obnoxious color or print to stand out from the sea of all solid pieces. With that in mind, home are some luggage possibilities:

Dads – Splurge on this Claiborne Luggage Lincoln Park 4 Piece Set and Dad will be set with luggage through his golden years! Simple, lightweight, neutral and durable – all things Dads like. This set has a piece for every situation and Mom can even borrow a piece or two when needed. $233.99

Grads – Recent grads on the go will love the Sherpani Meridan Bag (in cactuc). This wheeled and sturdy piece is small enough to carry-on flights but big enough to carry one through spring break. Numerous pockets holds cell phones, iPods, wallets and more. There’s even a credit card sized, id pocket. $179.96

Kids – All right, this price is pretty ridiculous for a kid’s suitcase, but it is so darn cute! I can see girls from 8 to 28 and far beyond loving this Loungefly Luggage Hello Kitty Rolling Luggage in grey. This bag has a great, hot pink lining, interior and exterior pockets and comes with a matching Duffle bag. $153.00

You – Possibly the only Diane Von Furstenberg piece I will ever be able to afford, I fell for her Studio Jacquard Wheeled Suitcases. How easy would this bag be to spot when waiting at baggage claim? Super stylish and sophisticated, this bright green, wheeled bag has a fully lined and spacious interior, large mesh pockets and a removable toiletry pouch. $149.99

Maybe not as important, but a few key travel accessories always feel luxurious to me, not matter where I’m going. Two that recently caught my eye:

Dads, Grads, Kids – We have a contender for the Best Water Bottle Ever! Move Collective’s Bobble Filtering Water Bottle has a carbon-based, replaceable filter that “removes organic ick from regular city tap water and meets the NSF International Standard 42 for chlorine, taste and odor reduction”. Fill ‘er up anywhere when you’re on the go for great tasting, filtered water without the landfill clogging, disposable bottle. Available in six colors – Bottles $10.00 each, Filters $7.00 each

You – Leave it to Cambria Cove to offer this striking set of Shanghai Striped Shoe Bags. Pack your highest heels in style with these silky and brightly striped bags with drawstring closures. These bags keep your shoes from getting scuffed in transit and keep your clothes free and clear from any shoe debris. Set of two $30.00

  1. Great collection @Tyna! I love LeSportsac bags. They are so sturdy and great for organization! Also I have had my eye on SaltboxNYC bags for some time. They are gorgeous. And seem to have excellent reviews. And even though I adore my Kleen Kanteen I will check out the Bobble Filtering Water Bottle. It would great for times when I am out and don’t have access to filtered water. I also think that I will get one for my world traveling in-laws. Filtered water is at a premium in places like Afghanistan!

Has anyone tried the Lug Puddle Jumper travel bag? They look really neat! I would like to get one but have never seen one in person. So I am a tad nervous to invest.

  2. @kellie76, I own the Lug Puddle Jumper in black. I got it to use as a gym bag but it’s way too nice for my sweaty Nikes! It has so much room yet manages to be compact, and I love all the compartments. I’m only sorry I didn’t get it in a bright color– hot pink, maybe!

@Tyna, thanks for the Saltbox code! I am seriously tempted…

  3. Thank you so much @Melissa! I really think that I am going to go for it. What size do you have? And do you think that it could work as a book bag for college?

  4. @kellie76, I didn’t know the Lug came in more than one size. Mine is called the Puddle Jumper Gym bag and it would be a perfect book bag!

  5. Hooray @kellie76 – a new bag! Must go check out the Lug Puddle Jumpers!

Also, an update, the Geo Pool Travel Bag is out of stock! Sort of lucky for me, because I was seriously tempted. Then, I saw the latest bags from Cambria Cove:

Similar – but even cuter I think! And while I can’t splurge on the tote I may have to get the sunglass case. Love these!

  6. I, too, own a couple DVF luggage pieces (thank you, TJ MAXX). One is an olive and dark plum geometric pattern and the other one is magenta with white trim. They are too sassy for words. I think I got them more than 1/2 off their ticketed price, too (again, thank you, TJ MAXX).
I have a thing for luggage and overnight bags. It’s probably because I’ve lived away from “home” since I was 17 and always needed to pack a bag if I wanted to visit my folks. My first piece of “luggage” was this great leather/carpet weekender bag from J. Jill that my mom bought me for Christmas one year when I was in college (I think she was sick of me coming home with black garbage bags filled with my stuff). The leather handles and shoulder straps are a cognac leather and the fabric part is this gorgeous mix of golds and earthtones–it reminds me of something Mary Poppins would carry. Now any time I go someplace and use that bag, I think of my mom :)
